Newsday's 22nd Annual

2005 All-Long Island girls basketball

A look at the girls basketball players who stood out on Long Island high school varsity squads in the winter of 2004-05.

FIRST TEAM

CHRISTINE KINNEARY, Holy Trinity

Nassau Player of the Year

5-8, Senior

Kinneary, headed for Boston University, averaged 21 points during the Titans' three-game run to another Class A Federation championship, highlighted by a 23-point effort in a 57-53 victory over Honeoye Falls-Lima (Section V) in the final.

HARMONIE CALINDA, Glenn

Suffolk Player of the Year

6-0, Senior

Calinda, who will play at Seton Hall, averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds and 3.6 steals as Glenn finished 29-0 and won its first state and Federation championships. Calinda was named the most valuable player of the Federation tournament after scoring 19 points, grabbing 21 rebounds and adding five assists.

KATELYN DUNN, Bethpage

5-9, Senior

Dunn played anywhere from point guard to center, averaging 21 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 2.5 steals. Dunn, who is headed to Molloy, finished her high school with 1,103 points, third in Bethpage history.

DANA BROWN, Elmont

5-7, Senior

When star guard Shezaray Rozzell went down with a separated shoulder this season, Elmont looked to Brown. She responded by averaging 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals a game as Elmont went 20-2 and reached the Nassau final. Brown will play at St. Rose in Albany.

ANNA McLEAN, Freeport

6-2, Senior

McLean's statistics were impressive enough - 17.2 points and a shooting percentage of 57.2 - but it was her defense that changed games. She averaged 14.2 rebounds and 5.1 blocks, and many of those blocks came early in games. Then, opponents often adjusted by not taking the ball inside. McLean was an All-Long Island pick last season, and has earned a scholarship to Iona.

DANIELLE WILSON,

St. John the Baptist

6-3, Junior

Wilson, an All-Long Island selection last year, changed games with her defense, averaging 14.4 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. She excelled on offense as well, averaging 21.1 points, and helped to lead St. John the Baptist to a second straight CHSAA tournament championship. Connecticut and Tennessee are among colleges courting her.

TIA GRANT, Holy Trinity

6-0, Senior

Grant, a guard, averaged 13 points and five rebounds a game, and helped comprise the Island's top triple-threat - along with Christine Kinneary and Nicole Emery - as Holy Trinity won its second straight Class A Federation title. Grant is headed to Villanova.

BRITTNEY MESSINA, Massapequa

6-0, Senior

Messina, who averaged 19.1 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks this season, moves on to Seton Hall as Massapequa's all-time career points leader (1,538). Messina's ultra-competitive on-court demeanor earned her some detractors, but make no mistake: there wasn't a more consistent player, or better one for that matter, on the the Island this season.

CHANEL CHISHOLM, North Babylon

5-11, Sophomore

Chisholm, a guard, averaged 22.6 points, 9 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.2 steals a game helping North Babylon to an 18-3 record. She scored 23 points in a losing effort against Northport in the Suffolk Class AA championship.

CIARA PETTAWAY, Southampton

5-8, Senior

Pettaway did not miss a game in five varsity seasons, and finished her career as Southampton's all-time leading scorer - boys and girls - with 1,789 points. That ranks eighth in Suffolk history. This season Pettaway averaged 17.5 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

SHARI ROESSLER, Massapequa

Nassau Coach of the Year

Affectionately dubbed "The Queen" by her team, Roessler's Chiefs were a royal pain in the postseason, pulling off the upset of the year with a victory over Elmont in the Nassau Class AA final, then blowing past Northport, then 22-1, in the Long Island championship. Overall, Massapequa was 19-4.

ANDY ATHANAS, Glenn

Suffolk Coach of the Year

Athanas found gold in his 19th season at Glenn, going 29-0 with a collection of "small school" talent that could compete with anyone on the Island. Still, not every team with talent plays unselfishly and gives an all-out effort every game, as highlighted by Glenn's 40-36 comeback win over Nichols (Buffalo) in the Class B state Federation championship game.
