A look at the boys basketball players who stood out on Long Island high school varsity squads in the winter of 2004-05.FIRST TEAM
JOHN GARCIA, Brentwood
Suffolk Player of the Year
6-9, Senior
The Seton Hall-bound center led the Indians to the Class AA Long Island championship. His blocked shot as time expired ended Uniondale's reign in the Long Island championship game and secured Brentwood's 42-40 win. A four-year starter, Garcia averaged 17 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks. He finished with 972 career points.
DANNY GREEN JR., St. Mary's
Nassau Player of the Year
6-6, Senior
The North Carolina-bound guard transferred to St. Mary's after a stellar freshman year at North Babylon. With Green in the lineup, the Gaels won 74 of 79 games and three league titles. Green, a McDonald's All-American, averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four blocks this season. He finished his career with 1,535 points.
MARK JOHNSON, Amityville
6-5, Senior
Johnson won a state public schools Class B title in 2003 and was a second-team All-Long Island pick as a junior. He led Amityville to the state Final Four for the sixth straight season, averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson was named to the Final Four All-Tournament team.
TYSON JOHNSON, St. Mary's
6-5, Senior
The Monmouth-bound forward was a second-team All-Long Island selection as junior. Johnson, a three-year starter, showed glimpses of explosive offense as a sophomore. This season he averaged 15 points, six rebounds and three assists as the Gaels went 25-1.
BRYANT LASSITER, Bay Shore
6-0, Senior
Lassiter, a two-time All-Long Island selection, was a three-year starter who led Bay Shore to back-to-back Suffolk Class AA title games. The Marauders won the title a year ago, but lost, 52-51, to Brentwood this season. Lassiter averaged 21 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. He made 59 three-pointers and shot 74 percent from the foul line. He had 924 career points and 123 threes.
TOM LESZCZYNSKI, St. Anthony's
6-10, Senior
The Lafayette-bound center anchored the middle for St. Anthony's, which capped the season with a state Class A Federation title. Leszczynski averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
TYRONE NASH,
Lawrence Woodmere Academy
6-5, Junior
A forward, Nash was effective down low or on the perimeter. After missing much of his sophomore season with injury, Nash averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four blocks for the IPPSAL and Class A Association of Independent Schools champion.
JON SCHMIDT, St. Anthony's
6-1, Senior
A guard, Schmidt teamed with Patrick Foley to run the Friars offense. He leaves with a CHSFL title in football and state Class A Federation crown in basketball. Schmidt averaged 17 points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals, and was MVP of the Federation tournament, scoring 11 points in a 61-50 win over Peekskill (I).
KAHIEM SEAWRIGHT, Uniondale
6-7, Senior
Seawright, Nassau player of the year as a junior, is headed to Rhode Island. A four-year player, he owns four Nassau championships, including this season's Class AA title. Seawright averaged 19.05 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three blocks, and finished his career with 1,076 points and 1,058 rebounds.
KEVIN VOSILLA, Massapequa
6-7, Senior
The Rider-bound center dominated the low post. Vosilla, a three-year starter, helped to lead Massapequa to the Nassau Class AA semifinals a year ago and the quarters this year. He averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks, and scored 783 career points.
MIKE RYAN, St. Anthony's
Suffolk Coach of the Year
Ryan, 36, took over a program that was 6-19 in 2002. St. Anthony's (24-6) won its second straight Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA Class A title, and added state CHSAA and Federation crowns to cap the program's best season since 1979. Ryan, a St. Anthony's graduate, is 53-26 in three seasons as coach.
TIM CLUESS, St. Mary's
Nassau Coach of the Year
Cluess, 46, is 262-87 in 14 seasons, but his 25-1 mark made this season arguably his finest. The Gaels played one of the toughest schedules ever by a Long Island school, only to lose in the state CHSAA Class AA title game. St. Mary's finished ranked 14th in USA Today's national poll. Cluess has won eight straight Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA titles, three state CHSAA Class B titles and a two state Federation Class B championships.
