All-Long Island Boys Soccer
A look at the boys soccer players who stood out on Long Island high school varsity squads in the fall of 2002.
MARCUS BRYANT
Center Moriches, Defense, Senior
Bryant, a 6-3, 185-pound sweeper, used a combination of speed and size to win balls on the ground and in the air. He was the defensive MVP of the Small Schools Championship Tournament, which Center Moriches won for the second time in two years. Bryant earned League VII MVP and All-Suffolk honors.
TITO CASTILLO
Wheatley, Midfielder, Senior
After a stunning junior year in the backfield during the Wildcats 2001 run to the state Class C title game, Castillo moved into the midfield, taking on both offensive and defensive responsibilities. A three-year starter, Castillo was the foundation of a team that advanced to the Nassau County final against Roslyn in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
KEITH DETELJ
Connetquot, Forward, Senior
The forward with the hard-to-pronounce last name had everyone talking this season, as he led Suffolk County with 38 goals in 17 games, tying Greg OBrien as Suffolks second all-time single-season goal scorer. In his fourth year on varsity, Detelj led the Thunderbirds to a Conference II title and the county Class A quarterfinals.
CHRIS FINLEY
Harborfields, Midfielder, Senior
Chris Finley was voted MVP of Suffolks League VI, largely because the senior midfielder was the most consistent, hard-working player for Tornadoes, winners of the first county Class B title in program history. Finley played half the season with a broken toe, scored six goals and served as a peacemaker on an emotional team.
GARY FLOOD
Hauppauge, Midfielder, Senior
Flood scored nine goals this season to bring his four-year total to 34, the fourth highest in Hauppauge history. A two-time All-Suffolk selection and twice the League IV MVP, Flood also finished with 25 assists this season.
RONNIE FORMAN
Massapequa, Midfielder, Senior
Forman led Massapequa to its first Nassau title in 22 years. The two-time All-County forward scored 12 goals and ran the Chiefs high-powered transition offense, moving the team seamlessly up and down the field.
