A look at the boys soccer players who stood out on Long Island high school varsity squads in the fall of 2003.
JESSE BAUST
Eastport, Midfielder, Senior
Baust did it all for Eastport in guiding the team to a 10-6-1 record.
He had 13 goals and seven assists, was a top defender, and even spent
some time at goalkeeper. He has been selected to two all-state teams,
and plays for a regional squad of the Olympic Developmental Team.
According to coach Bob Schimpf, Baust eats, sleeps and breathes soccer.
"A lot of kids, when they get older, they lose some of the excitement,"
Schimpf said. "Not Jesse."
DAN CARLOS
Carle Place, Midfielder/Fullback, Senior
Carlos was the primary force behind Carle Place's journey to its first
Nassau Class C title since 1996. In his fifth year on varsity, he
displayed uncanny field vision and a remarkably delicate touch. He
scored only three goals, but delivered 18 assists to his grateful
teammates. An All-County player as a sophomore and a junior, he was a
Friends captain for two years.
TOMMY HEINBOCKEL
Seaford, Midfielder, Senior
With 22 goals and eight assists, Heinbockel propelled Seaford into the
playoffs. An all-state player last year, he has been on the Empire
State team as a player the last three years, and as an alternate the
year before that. He also happens to be a great student, holding a
grade point average of 96.
JOE KINSEY
Westhampton, Forward, Senior
Kinsey, along with teammate Matt Majerczak, led Westhampton to the
Suffolk Class B title. He is an innate player, always in the right
position, always knowing when to shoot and when to dribble. He had a
team-high 13 assists, and his 24 goals were 10 more than he had last
season. The reason for the improvement? A dogged approach to the
off-season, in which he polished his dribbling and shooting skills to
become a more complete scorer.
TOM LOBBEN
Chaminade, Fullback, Senior
Lobben, a 5-9, 150-pound defenseman, displayed stunning athleticism in
leading Chaminade to its second straight CHSAA championship. His
leaping ability helped him beat opponents to 50-50 balls, and his speed
and shooting skills would have landed him on most teams' front line.
Despite playing in the back, he scored six goals, including one on a
30-yard shot in the Long Island final to break a scoreless tie.
MATT MAJERCZAK
Westhampton, Forward, Senior
Majerczak moved to Westhampton Beach from Poland two years ago, but as
far as his teammates were concerned, he might as well have been a gift
from above. Playing next to Joe Kinsey, he formed half of one of the
best scoring tandems on Long Island. He led the team with 25 goals, and
was one behind Kinsey with 12 assists. An all-conference
player last year, he uses his speed and strong overall fitness to power
past fullbacks and create scoring opportunities. He was the final piece
Westhampton needed in its run to this year's Suffolk Class B
championship.
