2006 All-Long Island Girls Lacrosse
A look at the best of the best in Long Island girls lacrosse for the 2006 season.
Shaylyn Blaney
Ward Melville, Midfield / Attack, Junior
Finished with 51 goals and 10 assists, raising her career totals to 208 goals and 54 assists. Her numbers were not overwhelming when compared with last year, when she was healthy and scored 87 goals, but there still was not a more feared player on Long Island. Has her choice of the top lacrosse colleges in the country.
Erin Brennan
Garden City, Midfield, Sophomore
Had 79 goals and 49 assists this season and was named MVP of the Class B state tournament as Garden City captured its first state title since 2002.
Jillian Cerar
Farmingdale, Midfield, Junior
Three-year starter who has 84 career goals and 47 assists. She was one of the fastest players in Nassau and, when called upon, could lock down an opponent's top scorer.
Lauren Costello
Holy Trinity, Midfield, Senior
Costello, headed for Boston College, is Holy Trinity's career leader in goals (157), assists (105) and points (262). This season she had 45 goals and 46 assists, leading Trinity to the CHSAA final.
Mary Cuddihy
Manhasset, Goalie, Senior
Cuddihy led Manhasset to three straight Nassau titles and her teams advanced to the state tournament twice. Cuddihy, who will play at Hofstra, totaled 11 varsity letters.
Brittany Davis
Shoreham-Wading River, Midfield, Junior
Followed her 51-goal, 12-assist sophomore season with 58 goals and seven assists this year. Was unstoppable in SWR's 12-11 Class C Long Island championship win over Manhasset, when she scored six goals.
Caitlin Defliese
Nassau player of the year
Garden City, Midfield, Senior
Defliese, who will play next season at Boston University, did not have statistics - 31 goals and 23 assists - that suggest dominance. But numbers miss the point with Defliese, and those watching Garden City's 8-4 victory over Brighton (Section V) in the Class B state final saw why. She won draws. She led the transition. She jarred the ball loose on defense and scooped up ground ball after ground ball. The one goal she did score, naturally, turned out to be the game-winner.
Lizzy Drumm
Friends Academy, Midfield, Junior
A four-year starter, Drumm came on her sophomore season and developed into one of Nassau's best this season with 66 goals and 20 assists. Her career numbers stand at 209 goals and 86 assists.
Corrine Gandolfi
Suffolk Player of the Year
Northport, Midfield, Senior
Extremely fast and athletic, Gandolfi had 56 goals and 63 assists, helping Northport to the Suffolk Class A championship. Gandolfi, who will play at Hofstra, was the best on the Island at stick checking from behind without drawing foul calls.
Rachel Guerrera
Wantagh, Defense, Senior
Calling Guerrera a physical and intense defender is an understatement. She is headed to Notre Dame, a Final Four team last season, and likely will make an immediate impact.
Traci Landy
Seaford, Attack/Midfield, Senior
Landy had 93 goals and 19 assists and is Long Island's all-time leading scorer with 512 career points, including 418 goals. Will play at Boston University.
Brianne Lomanto
Rocky Point, Goalie, Sophomore
Lomanto, known as "Breezy," doesn't even let that in during most games. In two seasons, Lomanto has saved 67 percent of the shots she has faced and has four shutouts.
Jackie Lyons
Rocky Point, Midfield, Junior
Erupted this season for 83 goals and 59 assists as Rocky Point won its first 19 games and did not lose until the Class B Long Island title game.
Meghan Markowski
Northport, Midfield, Senior
Markowski, who is headed for Brown, tallied 58 goals and 16 assists this season. Markowski's stick skills were second to none, as was her decision making in the open field.
Jessica Russo
St. Anthony's, Midfield, Sophomore
Had 83 goals and 27 assists after a standout freshman season in which she had 56 goals and 23 assists.
Emily Schaknowski
Shoreham-Wading River, Midfield, Senior
Schaknowski, headed next season for Delaware, finished with 205 goals and 169 assists, including 41 goals and 47 assists this season as SWR made its first state Final Four.
Lauren Schmidt
Bay Shore, Midfield, Senior
Stanford-bound Schmidt led Bay Shore to the Suffolk Division I title and within a goal of Northport in the Class A final. Finished with 51 goals and 33 assists.
Shannon Smith
West Babylon, Midfield, Sophomore
Smith already has 286 career goals and 170 assists. She scored a state-record 129 goals this season and added 67 assists, displaying stick skills seldom seen from a senior, let alone a sophomore.
Tracy Weiner
Nassau Coach of the Year
Farmingdale
Farmingdale, with mostly freshmen and sophomores, steadily improved as the season went, dispatching Massapequa in the Nassau Class A title game, then surprising Northport for the Long Island Championship. Wiener on the sideline can resemble Improv Night but she sure can coach.
Joe Spallina
Suffolk Coach of the Year
Rocky Point
The ever-intense "Mt. St. Spallina" graduated one of the best players in Rocky Point history - Rachel Ray - and came back with an even stronger team this season. Rocky Point allowed less than four goals per game and took the best record in program history - 19-0 - into the Class B Long Island final. And most of this team is back next season.
