A look at the field hockey players who stood out on Long Island high school varsity teams in 2001 as Newsday presents its first-ever All-Long Island field hockey squad.

BRITTANY BARNET
Garden City, Forward, Senior

From the outrageous statistics file cabinet: Barnet played four years on varsity and lost only one game, a non-leaguer at John Jay (Westchester). Barnet sat out last year’s state semifinal loss with a chipped kneecap. She won two state titles, and has a shot for a third this year. Barnet (23 goals) scored in 15 of 17 games this season, including the winner in the Class B Long Island championship game. She also had six assists. Barnet had 13 goals and three assists in 2000.

MEGAN CARROLL
Massapequa, Midfield, Senior

She may have had only three goals and four assists this season, but was a leader on and off the field. Carroll is a two-time All-Nassau selection and was voted team MVP two years in a row. A four-year varsity player who played defense as a freshman, Carroll stood out in her senior year, and not just because of her trademark blue bandanna.

NICOLE DePACE
Shoreham-Wading River, Midfield, Senior

Sure, Doni-Melissa Jantzen scored 15 goals, and Shana Tuttle had 14. But, it was DePace, part of Shoreham’s “Fab Four,” that stood out the most on both ends of the field. She led the team with 14 assists, many coming off penalty corners, as Shoreham reached the Suffolk B final for the second straight season. She’s a strong hitter with good stickwork and scored four goals.

LAUREN FOUNDOS
North Shore, Forward, Senior

Foundos, an STX/NFHCA All-America last year, scored 15 goals this year, including two four-goal games. Foundos scored 48 goals in her four years as a varsity starter and led North Shore to the Nassau Class C final twice. She played in the Junior Olympics and was an All-State selection last year, raising the bar for future North Shore teams.

MICHELLE FOX
Baldwin, Goalie, Junior

Baldwin was 12-2 this year. Eleven of those wins came via shutouts, testament to Fox’s ability. She’s an extremely aggressive goalie, unafraid to take a chance. Diving save to the right? Ordinary. Sprawling to the left for a loose ball? Old hat. Fox is one of the main reasons Baldwin reached the Nassau Class A final for a third straight year.

LAURA KAVAZANJIAN
Ward Melville, Midfield, Senior

A two-time selection to the Empire State team, Kavazanjian made a successful switch from defense to center midfield this season. She has excellent stickwork and sees the entire field. Her steady play helped bring a young Ward Melville team together and led them to the Suffolk Class A playoffs. Kavazanjian earned All-State honors last year and was a two-time All-Tournament selection (1998, 2000).
