A look at the girls lacrosse players who stood out on Long Island high school varsity squads in the spring of 2001-02. This is the second year of the team.

KATE BRESLIN
Manhasset, Attack, Junior

After Breslin scored 89 goals for Manhasset as a sophomore, every opponent knew she was the Indian to stop. No opponent, no combination of defenders, could do it. Breslin dodged the double- and triple-team in every game to score a staggering 105 goals, including six in Manhasset’s one-goal loss to Garden City in the Nassau Small Schools final. She also dished out 29 assists this season and has a career total of 54.

KERIN BOGHOSIAN
Garden City, Defense, Senior

Boghosian excelled as a D-wing last season, where she attracted the attention of Towson University scouts. That’s the position she will play in college, but when coach Diane Chapman asked her to play coverpoint for the Trojans this season, Boghosian said sure, and that attitude made her a true captain on the field and off. She led the defense, added four goals and an assist and helped Garden City to its ninth consecutive Nassau Small Schools title.

JUSTINE BURR
Northport, Attack, Junior

Outstanding stickwork and speed made Burr an All-American as a sophomore last year, and folded her right into Northport’s high-powered offense. The Tigers opened the season top-ranked in Suffolk’s League I and only lost a single game before capturing the Large Schools title. Burr contributed 60 goals, including three six-goal games – two consecutive to start the season.

LEANNE FERRETTI
Rocky Point, Attack, Junior

For as long as Rocky Point has had a team, Ferretti has been a starter. Of course, that’s only two years, and Ferretti led the team in scoring in both, adding 61 this season. Her offensive production and wily stickwork led the Eagles to the Suffolk Small Schools championship, in which Ferretti tied her season high of five goals for the fourth time.

SYDNEY GREENE
Huntington, Midfield, Senior

After four years on the varsity, three as a starter, Greene held everyone’s attention on the field. From attack wing, she scored 53 goals and added 10 assists this season, and improved her defense to boost the backfield as well. The Loyola-bound Greene was at her best in important games: She scored six goals in a one-goal, regular-season loss to Smithtown, then scored five to lead Huntington over the Bulls in the second round of the playoffs.

CATHERINE GUERRIERE
Smithtown, Midfield, Senior

A captain and four-year starter, Guerriere combined outstanding stickwork and a determined work ethic to score 49 goals and contribute 28 assists. The effort garnered her the team’s MVP award and a scholarship to Hofstra, where she plans to major in physical education so that she can someday coach lacrosse.
