N-Zone: High School Football preview

Hempstead's Terrell Williams and Riverhead's Miguel Maysonet

Hempstead's Terrell Williams, left, and Riverhead's Miguel Maysonet, right, are two players with the talent and work ethic to carry their teams to a Long Island championship -- and maybe scoop up a little hardware on the way. (Newsday.com composite)

Gregg Sarra: Floyd's good, but not unbeaten good

So what was the most asked football question in the preseason? Very simple! Will Floyd finally lose a game this season?

Hempstead's Williams a one-man work force

Hempstead coach Antoine Moore and his assistant, Michael Roberts, get a little nostalgic when Terrell Williams bursts through a hole in practice or pushes the team to run an extra mile or asks his assistant coach to help him work out.

Riverhead's Maysonet is the total package

If it happened in a real game, the video would be a YouTube hit among Long Island high school football fans. As it is, the 99-yard run by Riverhead's Miguel Maysonet against Floyd in a scrimmage on Sept. 2 has become the stuff of suburban legend.

More teams going with spread offense

His Freeport High School team wasn't playing a game on that November afternoon back in 2000, so what else would coach Russ Cellan be doing but watching a college football game on television?

Wyandanch, Stony Brook just happy to be back

Forget the usual preseason questions for a moment. Can Floyd do it again? Will Nassau recapture some L.I. championship game glory in November? Who will win the Thorp and Hansen Awards? Don't ask.

Nassau Conference I preview

Baldwin, Hempstead, Massapequa, East Meadow and defending county champions Farmingdale are among the favorites.

Suffolk Division I preview

Can anyone stop Floyd's record winning streak? Challenges will come from Sachem North, Lindenhurst, Longwood, Patchogue-Medford, Brentwood and Connetquot.

Nassau Conference II preview

The Conference II title is ripe for the taking. And Elmont, seeded first, may have the inside track with the return fo some outstanding backfield talent in quarterback Diashawn Miller and halfback Justin Mayers. Coach Jay Hegi knows the combination of Elmont's returning senior-laden squad, the realignment that moved Lawrence into Conference III, and a fairly balanced schedule gives his team the opportunity to knock on the LIC door.

Suffolk Division II preview

Andrew Smith gave us a preview of what to expect in 2008. The Riverhead linebacker had some fun showing off a chiseled physique that will undoubtedly thrust him into the spotlight as one of Suffolk's top linebackers. Then Smith got serious and guaranteed that Riverhead would be ringing the school's victory bell all season.

Nassau Conference III preview

The conference improved immensely when Lawrence dropped down from Nassau Conference II. Top-seeded Bethpage, which cruised into the Long Island Class III championship a year ago with big wins over Plainedge and Wantagh, will now have another hurdle to get back to the title game.

Suffolk Division III preview

There's no question that Islip's run to the Long Island Class III title was one made of opportunistic defense and methodical, yet clutch offense. The Bucs tucked away a fabulous 11-0 season and have a shot to repeat if they can find the same magic that helped them win every close game. The graduation of halfback Malcolm Brown will make it difficult.

Nassau Conference IV preview

This could be the year conference teams actually score a few points against Seaford. Maybe.

Suffolk Division IV preview

Babylon may be classified as the smallest team in Suffolk, but when it comes to a winning tradition, no one is bigger. Not even Floyd can say it is trying for its 12th consecutive county championship game. "We're very proud of what we've built here," said Babylon coach Rick Punzone, entering his sixth season with a 43-10 record. "The coaches before me built this program and we're keeping it going." Babylon has won three Long Island championships and seven Suffolk titles in the past 12 years.

Catholic League preview

A dominant program must replace quality players with quality players every year. This season, seven-time defending CHSFL Class AAA champion St. Anthony's breaks in a new quarterback, junior Tom Schreiber, who steps in for James Brady, now at Ivy League Georgetown.
