A look at Long Island's best wrestlers from the 2006-07 season.
Wrestler of the Year
Corey Jantzen
Shoreham-Wading River, senior, 135 pounds
(35-0, 172-7)
A two-time undefeated state champion. Jantzen is one of only six wrestlers to win four Suffolk titles in the 68-year history of the tournament.
Paul Liguori
Wantagh, soph., 112 pounds
(47-0, 134-12)
Has won two consecutive Nassau and state titles. He has won 86 consecutive matches and has been undefeated for two straight seasons.
Mike Gomez
Locust Valley, senior,
112 pounds (41-1, 143-23)
Was a four-time Nassau champion. He finished third in the state as both a sophomore and a junior. Gomez was a state runnerup this season. Will attend Drexel University next year.
Stephen Dutton
Hauppauge, freshman
119 pounds (40-2, 90-10)
Accomplished a rare feat by reaching the state finals as a freshman. He is the first freshman in school history to win a Suffolk title. Dutton won the National Freshman Tournament.
Tyler Mashkow
Islip, senior, 125 pounds
(47-3, 167-20)
Was a three-time Suffolk champ and three times all-state. He took third this season after winning a state crown as a junior and placing fifth as a sophomore. Accepted a scholarship to Hofstra.
Steven Keith
Shoreham-Wading River, soph., 96 pounds
(38-2, 89-13)
Won both his first state and county titles this season. He finished fourth in Suffolk last year and second as an eighth-grader.
P.J. Gillespie
Long Beach, senior,
145 pounds (41-0, 214-29)
Was a state champ this season after finishing third for three straight years. He is a four-time Nassau champion. He broke the Nassau record for career victories with 214. He earned a scholarship to Hofstra.
Lance Wade
Islip, senior, 152 pounds (38-4, 133-28)
Made the most of the opportunity given to him as he became the first "wild card" from Long Island to win the state title. Wade was a state runnerup as a junior. He placed in the Suffolk Tournament four times.
Eduardo Delgado
Long Beach, senior
152 pounds (43-1, 190-34)
Reached the state finals two straight years, winning the title as a junior. Delgado placed in the Nassau Tournament four times. He is second in career victories in Nassau with 190.
Maciej Jochym
Herricks, senior
215 pounds (44-0, 136-10)
Won the state heavyweight crown this season after finishing as the runnerup last year at 189 pounds. He won at least 40 matches a season in his last three years and took sixth place in the Senior Nationals.
Coach of the Year
Joe Patrovich, Islip
(13-2, 213-57-2)
Joe Patrovich has built a dynasty in his 12 years at Islip. The Bucs captured their second Suffolk title in three years and their sixth straight league tournament title. Islip has been the No. 1 dual-meet team on Long Island for four straight years. This year Islip became the first team from LI to have four all-state wrestlers in three straight years.
