A look at Long Island's best girls volleyball players from 2006.

JANINE ALDRIDGE

Nassau Player of the Year

Massapequa

Outside Hitter, Junior

Janine Aldridge, who was named Nassau Class AA MVP, was Massapequa's most potent offensive player and showed it on a nightly basis. Aldridge came up big in the Nassau Class AA final when she recorded five kills in game four of Massapequa's four-game win over Plainview JFK.

CAITLIN BENDY

Long Island Player of the Year

Ward Melville

Middle Blocker, Senior

Few players on Long Island hit with the power or fury of Caitlin Bendy. The 6-foot senior finished with 304 kills, 62 blocks and 42 aces. Bendy was the only player from Long Island selected first team Class AA All-State. Bendy was at her best in the Class AA Long Island championship match as she came through with 17 kills to help lead the Patriots to a five-game victory over Massapequa.

CHRISTINA FABIOCHI

Eastport/South Manor

Outside Hitter, Senior

Christina Fabiochi led Eastport/South Manor with 189 kills and 54 aces and nearly carried her team to the Suffolk Class A title match and was named the League V Player of the Year.

LEAH FILONUK

Leah Filonuk put fourth an impressive performance this season as she had 25 kills in Harborfields' win over Wantagh in the Class A L.I. Championship. Filonuk, who finished with 559 kills and 373 digs, was named Suffolk League VI player of the year.

JESSIE GUARINO

Wantagh

One of Nassau's best clutch performer, Jessie Guarino, the Nassau Class A co-MVP, helped the Warriors survive two grueling five-game matches in the Class A quarterfinal and semifinal and then helped lead them to their third county straight title.

Laura Haynes led the Trojans with 303 kills, 79 aces and 131 digs. The 5-10 senior was named Nassau Class A co-MVP and earned MVP awards in the Cold Spring Harbor, Herricks and Long Beach tournaments.

KARA KERLEY

Wantagh

Senior, Setter

Kara Kerley was clearly one of the main reasons Wantagh captured its third straight Nassau Class A title. Kerley and teammate Jessie Guarino formed one of the best one-two punches on Long Island.

RENEE LETTOW

Lindenhurst

Outside Hitter, Senior

Renee Lettow was one of the driving forces behind Lindenhurst's run to the Suffolk Class AA title game. She had 20 kills in her team's quarterfinal win over Bay Shore and 14 kills in Lindenhurst's semifinal sweep of West Islip.

JACKIE McKENNA

Glenn

Middle Blocker, Sophomore

Jackie McKenna came up big for Glenn as she accumulated 588 kills - third most in school history - 82 blocks and 68 aces. The 6-1 sophomore also had 10 kills and three blocks for Glenn in the Class B state final, which it lost to Eden (Section V).

AMANDA OSTAPOW

Ward Melville

Setter, Senior

Ward Melville had the best frontline on Long Island. But that frontline wouldn't have been as effective if not for the setting of Amanda Ostapow, who set the school's single-season record in assists with 992. Ostapow also finished with 179 kills.

HILARY PAVELS

Valley Stream South

Outside Hitter, Senior

Hilary Pavels led her team in every conceivable category this season. Pavels, Nassau's Class B MVP, finished the season with 289 kills and 42 aces. She had 16 kills in her team's win over Seaford in the Nassau Class B final.

ARIELLE WICHARD

Middle Hitter, Senior

Arielle Wichard, a two-time All-County performer who emerged as one of Nassau's best middle hitters, accumulated more than 500 kills the last two seasons and helped lead Bellmore JFK to consecutive conference titles and the Nassau Class AA semifinals.

ALL-LI VOLLEYBALL COACHES

NINA HARLOFF

Nassau

V. S. South

Nina Harloff's Falcons dominated Nassau Conference III-A, and swept through the playoffs for their first county championship. Harloff made her players believe they had what it took to make it.

CHARLIE FERNANDES

Suffolk

Ward Melville

The Patriots may have had their toughest road this season as one of their top players, Jeanette Gibbs, missed time to injury. But Fernandes kept them motivated to earn a fourth straight LI title.
