2004 All-Long Island Football

A look at the football players who stood out on Long Island high school varsity squads in the fall of 2004.

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE

KEVIN HENNESSY
West Babylon, Quarterback, Senior
He completed better than 60 percent of this passes and threw for more than 1,100 yards with 15 touchdown passes to lead West Babylon to an undefeated regular-season record in Suffolk's Division II. Hennessy escapability and accurate throwing arm made him a two-way threat on offense.

MIKE POWERS
Massapequa, Quarterback, Junior
Powers led the Chiefs to the Nassau Conference I final, but missed it because of injury. It was a magical ride just the same. The three-year starter completed 85 of 118 passes for 1,507 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 637 yards and 8 TDs. He caught two more scores. Powers also recorded 20 tackles, 2 sacks and 3 interceptions, including one for a score playing safety.

JOHN DeLUCA
Sayville, Running Back, Senior
He rushed for the third highest total in Suffolk history with 2,404 yards on 336 carries and scored 39 touchdowns. His Mack Truck style of running enabled him to carry a LI Championships record 40 times for 267 yards in Sayville's 55-14 win over Wantagh in the Class III title game.

JASON GWALTNEY
Hansen Award winner
North Babylon, Running Back, Senior
He is the only player to garner the Carl A. Hansen Award in two seasons and the the second player to earn All-Long Island status in three seasons. He earned his second Hansen trophy after he led the Bulldogs to the Class II Long Island title with a 43-14 win over Garden City. He scored 45 touchdowns and rushed for 2,882 yards on 358 carries this season, scoring 282 points. Gwaltney holds LI records for touchdowns (135), yards rushing (7,800), carries (948) and points (828) in a career.

DARYLE McCLENIC
Roosevelt, Running Back, Senior
McClenic, a two-time All-Long Island pick, led Roosevelt to back-to-back Conference IV titles and one Class IV Long Island championship. This year he ran for 1,365 yards on 152 carries and 17 touchdowns. McClenic had 36 tackles and 3 interceptions at safety. He leaves Roosevelt with 3,829 career rushing yards and 47 TDs.

BRETT WILSON
Longwood, Running Back, Senior
He emerged as a threat to score every time he touched the ball. Wilson scored 24 touchdowns and rushed for 1,873 yards to lead Longwood to the Class I Long Island crown. His speed and cutting ability made him a difficult target to tackle.

ANTHONY MUSCARELLA
Wantagh, Receiver, Senior
Muscarella burst onto the scene like no one else this season. He stepped in at receiver and caught 32 passes for 920 yards and broke the Nassau single-season record with 14 touchdown catches. He hauled in a 72-yard score and broke an 84-yard kickoff return for another touchdown in the Class III Long Island title game. A two-year starter at safety, Muscarella added 27 tackles and 2 interceptions.

MIKE PROCIDA
Wantagh, Receiver, Senior
Procida was a two-way force for the Conference III champion. The four-year starter rushed for 1,190 yards on 148 carries, caught 14 passes for 229 yards and accounted for 15 touchdowns. A three-time All-Nassau pick, Procida added 71 tackles at linebacker. He finished with 2,680 career rushing yards and 36 TDs.

TIM BOLDEN
North Babylon, Offensive Line, Senior
His high school football career will be defined by his final two games in which he switched from offensive line to fullback and helped the Bulldogs run away with the Class II Long Island Championship. His blocking at both positions help pave the way to the title.

JOHN CINELLI
Farmingdale, Offensive Line, Senior
Cinelli won the Martone Award, given to Nassau's top lineman, and led the Dalers to the Conference I title. He was a two-year starter for a team that rushed for more than 2,000 yards each season. Cinelli was a force on defense, too, with 36 tackles and 3 sacks.

STEVE FULFREE
St. Anthony's, Offensive Line, Senior
Fulfree replaced the graduated Alex Fletcher (Stanford) at the center position and the offense didn't miss a beat, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt and rushing for 2,369 yards in 11 games. He led the team with 54 pancake blocks and anchored a line that enabled St. Anthony's to earn and unprecedented fourth consecutive CHSFL championship.

CHRIS PUGLIESE
Patchogue-Medford, Offensive Line, Senior
Pugliese was three-year starter and the catalyst of the Patchogue offensive line that averaged 240 yards per game on the ground. He earned the Zellner Award, given to Suffolk's top lineman. He had 45 solo tackles, 18 assists and 5 sacks on defense, and totaled 14 sacks in his three-year career.

JEFF SCHAEFER
Massepequa, Offensive Line, Senior
Schaefer, a three-year, two-way starter was the linchpin for Massapequa's dynamic offense. He made 25 pancake blocks at tackle and was just as tough on defense. Schaefer tallied 43 tackles, 4 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries at defensive tackle.

PETER TADDEO
Longwood, Offensive Line, Senior
Massive run-blocker who cleared the way for Longwood to run to the Class I Long Island championship. He has quick feet to get out and block linebackers on the toss. He became a stalwart in a defense that improved throughout the season.

FIRST TEAM DEFENSE

NICK PARKER
Northport, Defensive Line, Senior
There are few players with the speed of Parker from the end position. He gets into the backfield in a hurry and disrupts the offense. He had 61 tackles, 15 assists, including 5 sacks and was named the defensive MVP in the PAL all-star game against Nassau. He is also an outstanding run and pass blocker.

GARY ROKER
Baldwin, Defensive Line, Senior
Roker was a four-year starter and two-time team captain. A tough guard on offense, Roker was even more disruptive anchoring the defensive line. He had 47 tackles, 5 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries for the Bruins, a Conference I semifinalist. He finished his career with 123 stops and 15 sacks in 35 games.

SCOOTER BERRY
North Babylon, Linebacker, Senior
Imposing two-time All-Long Island selection, that anchored the North Babylon defense with 51 solo tackles, 18 assists and three forced fumbles. At fullback, he led the way for Jason Gwaltney to set all of Long Island's rushing records.

BLAIR BINES
Floyd, Linebacker, Junior
The hard-hitting fullback opened huge holes for Andrew Miller and became a receiving threat from the backfield with seven touchdowns. He also had 64 solo tackles, four forced fumbles, fumble recovery and five sacks.

MATT DeLUCA
East Meadow, Linebacker, Senior
DeLuca was a four-year, two-way starter, lifting East Meadow to the playoffs the last two seasons. He rushed for 1,119 yards on 162 carries and 13 TDs. DeLuca made 68 tackles -- seven for a loss -- forced two fumbles and added one interception at linebacker. He finished his career with 29 TDs and his 277 tackles are a school record.

TERENCE HARTIGAN
Thorp Award winner
Garden City, Linebacker, Senior
Hartigan went 20-1-1, won two Conference II championships and one Class II Long Island title. He was a two-way force, earning him the Thorp Award as Nassau's top player and Piner Award as the best linebacker. Hartigan rushed for 1,065 yards on 131 carries, good for 8.1 yards per attempt, and nine touchdowns. The yardage was a Garden Cityrecord for a fullback and the third-highest total in school history. He led the way with 81 tackles -- eight for a loss -- in a unit that allowed 48 points in its first 10 games.

FRANK SCAPPATICCI
St. Anthony's, Linebacker, Senior
Led a defense that yielded the fewest points in the CHSFL with 65 solo tackles, 27 assists and 11 sacks. His lateral speed and sideline-to-sideline pursuit made this heavy hitter a fixture in the middle of the Friars defense on the way to the school's fourth straight championship.

DARREL YOUNG
Amityville, Linebacker, Senior
Led the Warriors to the Suffolk Division IV title with 1,963 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. He averaged 13.3 yards per carry and finished his three-year career with 4,024 yards and 55 touchdowns. He made 137 tackles, including eight for a loss and had three interceptions.

DONNY CORNELL
East Islip, Defensive Back, Senior
Versatile two-way player that made 92 tackles and intercepted five passes. He also rushed for 1,325 yards on 240 carries, scored 18 touchdowns and caught 11 passes for 230 yards. Had 11 interceptions and 2,205 yards rushing in a three-year career.

LESLIE JACKMAN
Freeport, Defensive Back, Senior
Jackman led Freeport to a Class I Long Island title and earned All-Long Island second team honors as a junior. This time he took the Red Devils to the Conference I semis, rushing for 907 yards on 111 carries and 6 touchdowns. He added three receiving scores and finished his career with 27 TDs. Jackman recorded 33 tackles, 5 passes defensed and 2 interceptions on defense.

ANDREW MILLER
Floyd, Defensive Back, Senior
Two-time All-Long Island selection, who amassed 3,033 yards on the ground over the past two years and scored 35 touchdowns. He was also the captain and leader of Suffolk's top defense in Division I. He will attend Johns Hopkins on a full lacrosse scholarship.

ANTHONY BARKSDALE
Farmingdale, All-purpose, Senior
Barksdale transferred from New Jersey to Farmingdale over the summer and became Nassau's most versatile threat. Barksdale ran for 869 yards on 136 carries and 11 TDs and caught 17 passes for 272 yards and one score for the Conference I champs. He also played quarterback, completing 18 of 31 for 289 yards and one score. As linebacker, he tallied 82 tackles, 3 sacks and an interception.

ALTON LUCAS
West Babylon, All-purpose, Senior
His slashing style enabled him to rush for 1,422 yards on 190 carries and score 20 touchdowns during a 9-1 season. Lucas also had 78 tackles and seven interceptions while playing multiple positions on defense. His three-year career stats: 274 tackles, 16 interceptions, 2,032 yards rushing and 46 touchdowns.

COACHES OF THE YEAR

JOE VITO
Nassau Coach of the Year
Roosevelt 11-0
Vito, 42, has won five county titles, three Long Island championships and two Rutgers Cups in his 11 seasons. But this team became his first 11-0 squad, capturing the Class IV LI crown. Roosevelt rolled through Conference IV for the second straight season and owns a 23-game win streak in Nassau. Vito, who was coach of the year in 1999, has a 74-30-2 record.

ADAM DeWITT
Suffolk Coach of the Year
Longwood 9-2
In his first year at the helm, DeWitt, 30, turned the Longwood program completely around as the Lions won the Class I title with a 39-23 win over Farmingdale. He implemented a new system and ended a four-year playoff drought. Wins over Patchogue-Medford and Floyd in the playoffs and a team that gained confidence as the season wore on were the ingredients for a marvelous championship run.
