Softball roundup: Stavola throws perfect game
Senior Jessie Stavola threw the third perfect game of her
career, striking out 15 in East Hampton's 1-0 win over Rocky Point in Suffolk League VI girls softball yesterday.
Stavola also drove in Molly Nolan in the sixth for the lone East Hampton (12-1) run. Nolan was 2-for-2. Brittany Stevenson threw a four-hitter and struck out seven for Rocky Point (3-10).
Ward Melville 2, Patchogue-Medford 0: Sophomore Kaitlyn Meade struck out 15 in the first no-hitter of her career for Ward Melville (8-7) in League I. Chrissy Theiss scored on Dani Shangold's RBI double, and Shangold scored on Courtney Yannace's single to rightfield that made it 2-0. Patchogue-Medford is 5-9.
Lindenhurst 5, Floyd 4: Lindsay Coppola's two-run bases loaded double highlighted a five-run first inning for Lindenhurst (8-6). Floyd (7-7) cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth. Courtney Gallagher gave up two earned runs and got a pop-up with runners on second and third to end the fifth. Nikki Donato was 2-for-3 with a run.
Kings Park 4, Hauppauge 3: Megan McGinley hit a two-out single to score Lori Smith in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Kings Park (12-2) a 4-3 lead in League V. McGinley went 2-for-3 with a run. Lindsay Taylor gave up two earned runs, two hits and struck out six to get the win. Hauppauge is 9-5.
Eastport-South Manor 5, Islip 4: Michelle Iannone's RBI single in the top of the fifth capped a four-run rally and put Eastport-South Manor (12-2) ahead 5-2 in League V. Islip is 6-8.
Pierson/Bridgehampton 7, Center Moriches 1: Pierson (6-2) scored six runs in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie in League VIII. Sara Mayer was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Laura Stafford allowed five hits and three walks and struck out 15 in a complete game. Center Moriches is 3-9.
Massapequa 5, Farmingdale 3: Mary Sieber hit a triple with the bases loaded in the first and struck out four in three innings of relief for Massapequa (5-11) in Nassau Conference AA-II. Rebecca Gretschel was 2- for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Farmingdale is 3-11.
Elmont 15, Great Neck South 11: Catrina Bowen went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Leslie Anselmi went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Elmont (5-7) in Conference AA-III. Angelica Duque went 2-for-3 with an RBI. GNS is 7-5.
East Rockaway 3, Seaford 1: Michelle Corso hit a walk-off, two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the eighth for East Rockaway (5-11) in Conference ABC-I. Heather Loughran threw a one-hitter, allowing one unearned run, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Seaford is 15-1.
Carle Place 2, Clarke 1: Andrea Veigas scored the winning run for Carle Place (9-8) in Conference ABC-II on a squeeze bunt by Ashley Cole. Cole gave up one run in five innings of relief to get the win. Joanne Barilla was 2-for-4 and drove in the tying run in the bottom of the 10th with a double. Molly Karcher pitched 11 innings, giving up five hits and striking out eight for Clarke (3-15).
St. Dominic 10, St. Mary's 0: Freshman Isabella Corrao pitched a perfect game with 17 strikeouts for visiting St. Dominic (7-6) in CHSAA. The only batter to make contact was thrown out on a bunt attempt. Courtney Gordek went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs, and Molly Geary went 3-for-5 with three runs. St. Mary's is 2-10.
