A look at Long Island's best baseball players from the 2008 season.
LONG ISLAND PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Marcus Stroman
Patchogue-Medford | Pitcher/Shortstop | Junior
Stroman made huge strides offensively. He hit .400 with two home runs, 18 RBIs, 28 runs, 30 stolen bases and hit .536 with runners in scoring position. On the mound, he went 8-1 with a 1.85 ERA. In 641/3 innings, he allowed 37 hits, struck out 96 and walked 18. He has committed to Duke.
NASSAU PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Mike Mandarino
Massapequa | Pitcher | Senior
Mandarino's postseason performances earned him Player of the Year honors. He pitched a no-hitter against Port Washington in the Nassau Class AA quarterfinals and, in the Long Island championship series against Islip, he hit two home runs and had five RBIs while pitching a complete-game four-hitter. In Game 1 of the states, he shut out Hilton with another complete-game four-hitter. The Dominican-bound Mandarino batted .402 with a .784 slugging percentage. He had nine home runs and 33 RBIs. On the mound, he went 11-1 with a 1.33 ERA.
Alexander Aurrichio
Half Hollow Hills West | First base | Senior
The 6-6 slugger hit .491 with five home runs and 27 RBIs. He did not make an error. He was the captain for Hills West, which won the league title. He was also the captain for the soccer and basketball teams, which both won county championships. He will attend Columbia.
Chris Burke
Islip | Pitcher/Shortstop | Senior
Burke was a force at two positions. He was the winning pitcher in a Class A state semifinal and went 6-2 with a 0.86 ERA. He pitched 562/3 innings, allowing 35 hits, 14 walks and struck out 78. The Iona-bound Burke hit .578 with 25 runs, four home runs, 31 RBIs, 18 stolen bases and had a .686 on-base percentage.
Patrick Cantwell
West Islip | Catcher | Senior
Cantwell was one of the leaders for West Islip, which won the Suffolk Class AA championship. Cantwell, who will play at Stony Brook, hit .477 with 31 runs, eight triples, two home runs and 33 RBIs. He was also an excellent defensive catcher throwing out six of 12 base stealers.
