2007-08 All-Long Island Fencing
A look at Long Island's best fencers from the 2007-08 season.
Peter Tyson
Boys Fencer of the Year
Ward Melville, Sr., saber
The 18-year-old, who had a quick rise to fencing stardom, went 31-0 last season and led the Ward Melville boys team to an undefeated season. He will be attending Brown University in the fall.
Sarah Barger
Girls Fencer of the Year
Ward Melville, Sr., saber
Barger, 17, is arguably the best female fencer on the island and is ranked 21st nationally. She compiled a 50-1 record in her last two seasons and has been part of six championship teams.
Lee Auslander
Hewlett, Sr., saber
The 17-year-old was talked into fencing by her brother when she was in the seventh grade. Not only was she willing, but she became consumed with the sport. She broke out this year and went 28-2.
Tyler Collins
Oyster Bay, Jr., saber
The 17-year-old, who was mentored by Alfred Lizza (now at Penn State), had a 26-3 record and was the sparkplug for an Oyster Bay team that finished fourth in the Nassau County championships.
Cliff Fishler
Great Neck South, So., epee
The 15-year-old went 26-3 and led an upstart Great Neck South team to a Nassau championship. At 6-2, he is taller than most of his opponents.
Ashley Jurgielewicz
Ward Melville, So., epee
Jurgielewicz, 15, who was voted an All-Long Island selection by the coaches, went 26-6 this season. Her most important win, though, was her last. With Ward Melville tied 13-13 with Great Neck North in the L.I. finals and their 98-meet win streak on the line, Jurgielewicz took the deciding the match.
