On draft day, Yashin is traded to the Islanders in exchange for the No. 2 pick in the draft, right winger Bill Muckalt and a young defenseman named Zdeno Chara. The Senators used the second pick to draft center Jason Spezza.

2001-02 season
In his first season with the Isles, Yashin scored 32 goals and posted 75 points and helped lead the team to the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons. They were defeated in seven games by the Toronto Maple Leafs. During the series, Yashin notched seven points.

2005-06 season
After Michael Peca was traded before the start of the 2005-06 season, Yashin was named team captain. He ended the season with 66 points and plus/minus of -14 as the Isles missed the playoffs for the first time during Yashin’s tenure. It would be the last full season he would play for the team.

2006-07 season Due to a knee injury he

2006-07 season
Due to a knee injury he suffered in November, Yashin played in only 58 games during the regular season. He registered 50 points in that time as the Islanders were able to clinch the eighth and final playoff spot. They lost the opening series to the Buffalo Sabres, 4-1. Yashin scored no points.

June 7, 2007 The Isles bought out the

The Isles bought out the rest of Yashin’s contract, paying him $17.63 million over the next eight years. He has not played in the NHL since. Yashin played the next four seasons in the KHL.
