Isles' Comeau out for tonight, playing it safe w/concussion

Blake Comeau, who suffered a concussion during the Isles' 3-0 loss to the Penguins last Wednesday, practiced with the team fully this morning but will not play tonight.

"I felt good so hopefully I can get back in the lineup soon."

Although symptom-free after skating this morning, Comeau and the Islanders will play it safe when it comes to head injuries.

Comeau sustained the injury on a blindside hit from Max Talbot in the first period Wednesday. He felt sore during the game but didn't miss a shift. It wasn't until the next day during practice that he noticed some warning signs.

"I wasn't feeling awesome, but I didn't feel anything alarming so I kept playing. I felt good the next day and I started practicing the next morning and I got off because I was getting a bit of a headache--it was getting worse-- so I didn't want to take any chances."

Comeau rode the bike yesterday and was subsequently cleared to practice today. The 24-year-old winger, who has 13 goals and 17 assists in 50 games this season, wants to take every precaution before returning to the lineup.

"I don't want to take any risks. It's something where I don't want to play around with."

Comeau said there is now much more of an awareness with head injuries across the league.

"I've got friends I've talked to and they've all said the same thing--not to mess around with it--to be 100% sure. That's one of the good things about the concussions is the awareness around the league and that guys now are taking the right precautions."

Captain Doug Weight skated on his own today in a track suit before the team went on the ice. Jack Capuano said he had no timetable for him. When asked if he was confident Weight would play again this season, Capuano said:

"I have no idea."

The Islanders expect to have a more definitive update on injured forward Trent Hunter (left MCL) by tomorrow.
