Players react to news of Scott Gordon's dismissal as head coach
After Jack Capuano's first practice as head coach, we had the chance to speak to several Islanders about their reaction to the news of Scott Gordon's dismissal.
Arthur Staple will have more on this later, but here's a quick round-up of what some had to say:
Captain Doug Weight:
"It's never a good day and I think what disappoints too is that we're a team that's losing and that's underachieving. Make no bones about it, no one in that room thinks it's all Gordo's fault."
"For whatever reason, we haven't adapted well to each game. In the past when you see teams are struggling you see some desperation and some difference in the game and I just haven't seen it from the first period on, it's been the same stalemate. We had to have a change."
"We had to look at ourselves in the mirror and realize we are a big piece of this. Our attitude, our play, how we come to the rink affects a lot of people. It's a sport and it happens."
Goaltender Rick DiPietro:
"It's always a difficult situation. Scott was a great coach and a great person. It's always tough to see someone have to take the fall for when things are going wrong, but that's the nature of the business and the nature of the game. The coach is always first to feel the affects of it."
"We've still got a lot of the season left. As crazy as it sounds, if we could've picked a time to lose 10 straight we picked a good time to do it."
Goaltender Dwayne Roloson:
"This is my first time going through this. We know it has nothing to do with what Scott had done, it's more of how we handled things, how we played. We know you can't get rid of 23 guys and get 23 new ones."
"Unfortunately, we put our general manager in a tough situation and our coaching staff in a tough situation.
"We obviously haven't been playing at the standard we should be. We have to move on now. Hopefully, we can get some new energy, some new ideas, a different style of play."
"Scott tried a lot of different things and we played better than other teams some nights, we didn't get a lot of breaks. Things didn't go our way and Garth felt it was the right time to bring in some new ideas."
