Ryan Pulock impresses at Islanders minicamp

Ryan Pulock has only been on the ice for about an hour for his new organization, but already he has developed a reputation. If there’s one thing you his fellow prospects learned about him on Tuesday, it’s that you don’t want to get in the way of his shot.

“He’s a big, strong kid and hopefully you don’t get hit with one of his shots in front of the net,” Brock Nelson said.

Pulock, who was selected by the Islanders with the 15th pick in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft, got his first opportunity to showcase his abilities in front of the front office at Islanders minicamp on Tuesday. Though he looked comfortable out on the ice, Pulock said he was nervous entering the week.

“It was kind of nerve-racking to start,” Pulock said. “It’s your first camp and you want to make a good first impression. Honestly, I want to play here as soon as possible.”

While his fellow teammates at the camp were impressed by his high-powered shot and his strength, the coaching staff seemed encouraged by the poise and maturity the 18 year-old showed.

“I met him for the first time at the draft and he’s a high-character kid,” Capuano said. “He’s a mature kid, he’s a reserved guy in the short time since I’ve met him. For his age, the maturity, the way he handles himself, it’s very professional.”

Though Pulock is hoping to play for the Islanders as soon as possible, he understands that he is young and that he has a lot to learn. He is excited about the coming days and the chance to get further acquainted with the coaching staff and to learn a few things while he’s here.

“You can learn a lot at these camps,” Pulock said. “It’s a lot of teaching, teaching different parts of the game. If you listen to them you can definitely improve your overall game and that’s what I’m here to do this week.”
