Second group, including Tavares...

Second group on the ice today:

Forwards: Weight, Tavares, Hunter, Okposo, Nielsen, Bergenheim, Marcinko, Park, Haley.

Defenseman: Streit, Martinek, DeHaan, Witt, Gervais, Hamonic

Goalies: Biron, Roloson

Tavares, who has been battling the flu bug for the past couple of days said he's still feeling under the weather, but is happy to finally have his first NHL training camp underway.

"I'm definitely learning a lot, having fun, and getting used to things like the system with Scott. It was a great first day so hopefully, just keep building and improving every day."

Tavares, who also got a significant amount of one-on-one instruction from Gordon today, said all of the guys have been great at making him feel comfortable. Seems as if his roommate Doug Weight has taken him under his wing a bit, as well as several of the other veterans.

When asked about finding the back of the net against Roloson a couple of times during today's session, Tavares said Roloson cracked: "I'm just trying to get your confidence up by letting a couple in."

Here's what a couple of the other veterans had to say about their first impressions of Tavares:

Doug Weight: "Obviously, anyone picked that high has a tremendous amount of talent. He's shown that. He has a great set of hands and a mind for the game. There's a reason he's been as highly-touted for as long as he's been."

Brendan Witt: "Very confident. I was very impressed with his handshake (Seriously, this is the most common denominator when people talk about their first introduction to Tavares)."

Trent Hunter: "He's a good player. He has good hands, a good shot, and good vision. He's fun to watch out there."

I'll have more on Tavares' first day of training camp in tomorrow's paper, so check the web later for a link to the story.
