Ryan Pulock has only been on the ice for about an hour for his new organization, but already he has developed a reputation. If there’s one thing you his fellow prospects learned about him on Tuesday, it’s that you don’t want to get in the way of his shot.
“He’s a big, strong kid and hopefully you don’t get hit with one of his shots in front of the net,” Brock Nelson said.
Pulock, who...Read more »
Jack Capuano tossed in a little wrinkle to his usual gameday banter, saying the Islanders “have to play almost a perfect game” to beat the Penguins.
“We make one mistake and it’s in the back of our net. They make three or four mistakes and we may still not score,” Capuano said. “I guess I’m not saying perfect, but we have to be close to perfect to be successful.”
Capuano may be exaggerating...Read more »
PITTSBURGH -- Jack Capuano tried to be coy about his lineup changes, but the extra on-ice work of a few Islanders gave away his likely Game 2 lineup.
David Ullstrom appears to be subbing in for Marty Reasoner up front, and Matt Carkner would be in for Thomas Hickey on defense.
Evgeni Nabokov, who took a Jarome Iginla slap shot off his head that broke his mask and was pulled after allowing...Read more »
BUFFALO -- Islanders fans on Twitter let out a collective groan when I posted Jack Capuano’s lineup for Friday night: Eric Boulton remains in the lineup in place of Jesse Joensuu and Lubomir Visnovsky comes out for Thomas Hickey.
Capuano said Visnovsky, who has played 35 of the Isles’ 47 games so far (he missed the first 10 games of the season before he reported, then two more to return to...Read more »
It’s NHL awards season -- which means lots of deliberating over who gets my fifth-place Selke Trophy award vote.
This season is different than recent ones, however, because the Islanders have more viable candidates for NHL awards than at any time in perhaps 15-20 years. It can be a difficult balance in a regular, 82-game season to highlight teams you only see once or twice; with no inter-conference...Read more »
Jack Capuano is prepared for Tuesday’s game against the Panthers. He expects his Islanders team to be ready, too.
"We’re kidding ourselves if we’re thinking about it any other way than we have to be focused and committed to working hard,’’ he said. "At this time of year the teams that work the hardest and do the right things win hockey games. I don’t go in thinking 'must wins.' We...Read more »
The Islanders' move to Brooklyn isn’t scheduled to occur until the 2015-16 season, but an accelerated timetable is always possible.
Yet for John Tavares, the countdown for leaving Nassau Coliseum has already started. And he’s getting sentimental about it.
"There’s been a lot of special moments, a lot of great things have happened in this building,’’ he said after Monday’s practice....Read more »
BOSTON -- After the Islanders’ 2-1 win here on Thursday night, the loudest thing in the visitors’ dressing room was a bit of music -- and sarcastic booing from the stall of the reigning Good Guy Award winner when the media parade walked in, causing the music volume to be lowered.
But that’s all. No whooping, no hollering; maybe the Isles were done with that, but their post-game comments were...Read more »
BOSTON — Islanders coach Jack Capuano had a bit of a chuckle Thursday morning when asked if the Bruins were vulnerable because of some injuries.
“I don’t know how banged up they are," Capuano said. “They’re pretty deep.’’
That depth is being tested for the Bruins, who dropped into the No. 4 spot in the Eastern Conference after Thursday’s 2-1 loss. They are a possible candidate for...Read more »
Jesse Joensuu's first NHL game in nearly two years on Saturday felt "weird,'' as he put it, being that he was returning at the tail end of this shortened season after sports hernia surgery.
But the forward still is excited to have a home with the Isles, two years after he left for Europe under less-than- pleasant circumstances.
"I feel like on every level, as a human being,...Read more »
