The trade deadline is seven days away and the Islanders will be busy -- just not quite yet.
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported on Tuesday night that six teams have called Islanders GM Garth Snow about Thomas Vanek, with one team making a “serious offer” that was, obviously, rejected. McKenzie said there are a similar number of teams inquiring about Andrew MacDonald, with no offers made as of yet.

Had a brief chat with Isles GM Garth Snow earlier Wednesday, covering a few topics of interest. Here are some takeaways from that conversation:
-- Snow and Steve Bartlett, the agent for Thomas Vanek, have had some dialogue over the past few weeks and that should pick up in the next couple of weeks. Snow and the Islanders need to know in fairly short order if Vanek is willing to sign long-term....Read more »
A few notes after another two-goal rally by the Islanders to beat the Rangers:
-- I noted it a bit on Twitter throughout the game and even Jack Capuano didn’t let it go uncommented upon afterwards: The bad start Tuesday night had a lot to do with the John Tavares line. True, both Rick Nash goals came off near-misses at the other end -- the puck hopping on Tavares off a two- on-one and Thomas...Read more »
TORONTO -- I never want to make too many direct comparisons between this year’s Islanders and last year’s, but it was hard to avoid last night. This 5-3 win looked an awful lot like the 5-3 win here on April 18.
John Tavares dominating? Check. He was 2-1-3 in April, 0-3-3 last night. Early deficit? Check. Down 2-0 last season, 1-0 last night. Continuing a run of resilient play on the road?...Read more »
Some notes off Monday's skate:
-- Islanders coach Jack Capuano said Monday after practice that defenseman Thomas Hickey, who left Saturday's game in Philadelphia after taking a shot off his foot, is “day-to-day.”
Capuano did not provide any further comment regarding Hickey, who is one of the team’s more reliable defenseman. The Islanders’ defense has been marred with key injuries as...Read more »
Aside from Thomas Vanek, the Isles have a pending UFA in defenseman Andrew MacDonald, who is coming off perhaps the most below-market deal anywhere in the NHL (he’s making $550,000 this season).
MacDonald is in line for a huge raise. Given the Isles’ depth woes on defense, one would think talks would have begun to keep him from the open market in July, but nothing has been initiated yet....Read more »
COLUMBUS -- We don’t need another 1200-word breakdown of what’s doing with your Islanders today. But we can dive into some of the bad and some of the good coming out of Thursday’s 1-0 loss to the Hurricanes:
-- Atop the list of bad things is the power play, now at 0-for-21 and sliding. It is also 0-for-18 since Thomas Vanek arrived, though John Tavares’ goal in DC was essentially a PPG, since...Read more »
A few notes on the first preseason gameday, with the team in Regina and Calgary and me... not.
-- We’ll have line combos and defense pairings after the Isles skate in Regina later this morning (both game rosters are skating in Regina, then the Calgary group is flying there). But you can assume that Jack Capuano will stick with the lines he drew up for the first four days of training camp,...Read more »
Andrew MacDonald is headed home to Nova Scotia this week, but he'll be back in three weeks to have a metal rod removed from his broken left hand.
MacDonald took Douglas Murray's shot off the back of his hand in Game 4, an injury that the Isles had trouble overcoming.
"I thought the guys played their hearts out in Game 6," he said. "It was just one of those things."...Read more »
Pittsburgh -- Jack Capuano wouldn't say who will play on the top defensive pair with Travis Hamonic in place of Andrew MacDonald, who is out for the remainder of the postseason with a broken hand.
That spot most likely will go to either Brian Strait or Mark Streit. If it's Strait, that would be quite a jump from the beginning of this season, when the Isles scooped him...Read more »
