After the biggest Islanders trade in quite a while -- perhaps since the last time these two teams made a meaningful trade, when the Isles acquired the rights to Michael Peca for Tim Connolly and Taylor Pyatt in the summer of 2001 -- we’ve all had a night to sleep on it and gather our thoughts.
Here are some of mine after the Isles dealt popular, steady Matt Moulson, their first round pick...Read more »
CHICAGO -- Kevin Poulin is in goal, Cal Clutterbuck is in the lineup, Matt Moulson is en route and Brock Nelson is a likely scratch.
There are a few changes coming for the Islanders on Friday night here against the Hawks, topped by Poulin getting his first start of the season in net after Evgeni Nabokov had three strong games.
Nabokov will play on Saturday in Nashville and it was just...Read more »

BUFFALO -- Matt Moulson is 29 and a bona fide scorer in the NHL after four seasons on John Tavares’ wing. But Moulson’s first postseason will take his late-blooming career to a new height. Here’s his “In Your Own Words” about the playoffs:
“Ever since I’ve gotten here that’s been a huge goal of ours, getting to the playoffs. All the guys who have been here since I’ve been here, that’s what...Read more »
Some quotes from around the Islanders' locker room in Raleigh, N.C., on Tuesday night after they clinched their first playoff berth since 2007.
John Tavares: “We had to win a lot more games late because we put ourselves behind the eight-ball with the start to the season we had. We knew we needed to start winning some games that we’d been losing the first half of the season, and we needed to...Read more »
It’s NHL awards season -- which means lots of deliberating over who gets my fifth-place Selke Trophy award vote.
This season is different than recent ones, however, because the Islanders have more viable candidates for NHL awards than at any time in perhaps 15-20 years. It can be a difficult balance in a regular, 82-game season to highlight teams you only see once or twice; with no inter-conference...Read more »

In 2011-2012, almost 15 percent of all NHL games were decided by the shootout, accounting for 181 extra points in the league standings. The Islanders, who went 7-4 in shootouts last season, bolstered their already-strong shootout effort by signing Brad Boyes to a 1-year contract. In his prime, Boyes was a formidable offensive threat, scoring 43 goals and 65 points with St. Louis in 2007-2008,...Read more »
Matt Moulson was nearly speechless after learning he was named the NHL's First Star of the week. He scored six goals and added an assist as the Islanders went 2-0-1.
Moulson became the first NHL player this season to score four goals in one game when he tallied the hat trick plus one against Dallas. He leads the Isles with 13 goals and is third on the team in points with 19.

Less is more when the Islanders consider how few goals they are scoring — two per game so far.
“You try not to put it too much in their heads,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said of his team’s 3-0 loss to Pittburgh Tuesday night — the second time they were shut out in seven games going into Thursday night’s rematch in Pittsburgh. “Obviously, there were some deficiencies in our game that we...Read more »
