PITTSBURGH -- Jack Capuano said he wants to go with a more veteran lineup against the Penguins on Friday night, so he’s shuffled the deck a bit.

Thomas Vanek is back, and that was a no-brainer. After missing five games with a strained upper-body muscle, Vanek did not even need to skate Friday morning to pronounce himself ready to go for the first time in nearly two weeks. He’ll be back with...

COLUMBUS --  Evgeni Nabokov gets the call on Saturday night here against the Blue Jackets, who have lost five straight.

Cue the internet outrage!

But here's the case for Nabokov on Saturday and Kevin Poulin on Sunday, in his hometown of Montreal:

-- Poulin has started on consecutive nights in the NHL just once, on Feb. 20-21, 2012. He was pulled after allowing two goals in...

Isles are up and down in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH -- The Islanders have a rather mixed bag, history wise, in this city and this relatively new building where the Penguins play.

Friday night’s game should add to that memorable list either way.

If the Isles can pull out a win over the 7-2-0 Penguins with a defense that will feature Matt Carkner and recent signee Radek Martinek, plus goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who gets the start...

Pierre-Marc Bouchard returns to the lineup Tuesday night for the Islanders and both of Jack Capuano’s rookies will be healthy scratches against the Sabres.

Capuano said he’d yet to make a determination as to which forward will come out of the lineup to allow Bouchard to return, but it was likely to be Brock Nelson, who was a healthy scratch in Chicago on Friday.

Matt Donovan, the Isles’...

David Ullstrom is tripped in the third period

PITTSBURGH -- Jack Capuano tried to be coy about his lineup changes, but the extra on-ice work of a few Islanders gave away his likely Game 2 lineup.

David Ullstrom appears to be subbing in for Marty Reasoner up front, and Matt Carkner would be in for Thomas Hickey on defense.

Evgeni Nabokov, who took a Jarome Iginla slap shot off his head that broke his mask and was pulled after allowing...

Matt Carkner reached the playoffs with the Senators last spring and was an integral part of the Sens’ nearly picking off the top-seeded Rangers.

Carkner is back again with an underdog No. 8 seed and, while he may not play much, he’s aware of how the Islanders stack up:

“Last year [with Ottawa] we struggled early, picked up pace at the end. This year, I wouldn’t say teams are worried...

PHILADELPHIA -- The workload is not getting to Evgeni Nabokov, who is backing up Kevin Poulin on Thursday night against the Flyers.

“Half of this game is the mental part,” Nabokov said after the morning skate. “You get in a groove, you just need to take care of yourself mentally. Physical part is not that hard, really.”

So Nabokov, who has started 15 of the last 16 games for the Isles...

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Islanders can clinch a playoff spot Tuesday night, and we’ve discussed over and over how it would be the first appearance for the long list of homegrown players on this roster.

Of the 27 Isles currently on the roster, 16 would be in an NHL postseason for the first time. That includes John Tavares, Kyle Okposo, Josh Bailey, Travis Hamonic and the other obvious ones.

But...

Lubomir Visnovsky reported that his 4-year-old son had successful, unspecified surgery in Bratislava, Slovakia, over the weekend and that his wife and two children soon will be joining the defenseman on Long Island.

Visnovsky did not report to the Islanders when training camp began due to concerns over his son’s health. He hoped to stay the entire season in Slovakia but the KHL said he could...
