EDMONTON -- The deadline has passed and it's safe to say just about every observer, from the professional types on TSN and Sportsnet up here to just about every fan on Twitter, feels the Islanders failed. A few thoughts and notes on the last several weeks of profound disappointment in Islander country:
-- The Thomas Vanek trade quite obviously fell short of expectations. Once Vanek rejected...Read more »
Glendale, Ariz. -- Ryan Strome has arrived with the Islanders, but his NHL debut will have to wait.
Jack Capuano said Strome will sit out tonight’s game with the Coyotes, as if the coach weren’t already one of the most unpopular people on Twitter (at least as far as my timeline is concerned).
“We wanted to get him in here, get acclimated to our meetings, have some time to sit down with...Read more »
Pittsburgh -- There are two words the Islanders hoped never to hear again in describing their team, words that are now looming close -- as close as the result from Philadelphia on Thursday night.
If the Flyers beat the Sabres on Thursday, they will leapfrog the Isles and Blue Jackets, leaving the Isles tied at 19 points with Columbus but with fewer regulation/overtime wins....Read more »
Cal Clutterbuck, one of the newest members of the Islanders, met with fans Tuesday at Nassau Coliseum to sign autographs and take photos.
"You can never have too many fans, and to take an hour, an hour and a half to come out and hang out with them, interact with them for the first time, it was a pretty good day,” Clutterbuck said after making his first public appearance as an Islander.

Pittsburgh -- All Casey Cizikas knew of the NHL playoffs before this season was whether he could stay awake for the second half of the nighttime doubleheaders on TSN or CBC during his preteen years in Ontario.

It's obvious that the Isles' homegrown core never has experienced a playoff series — 16 of the 27 players on the roster never played in an NHL playoff game.
But even their veterans are fairly inexperienced. Evgeni Nabokov leads the way with 80 playoff games, all with the Sharks; next is Marty Reasoner with 23 games, his last coming in 2003.
The Islander with the most recent playoff run:...Read more »

While Anders Lee had a goal in his first period of NHL action Tuesday night against Winnipeg, Ryan Strome, the Isles' 2011 first-round pick, did the same in his pro debut with Bridgeport. Strome scored for the Sound Tigers in the opening period of their game in Worcester, Mass., a day after reporting to the team following the elimination of his Niagara squad from the OHL playoffs....Read more »
Mark Streit will not be signing a contract extension before Wednesday's 3 p.m. trade deadline, it appears.
But unless Islanders general manager Garth Snow receives a trade offer than he couldn't possibly refuse -- and that would have to include a first-round draft pick -- Streit, the Islanders captain, still will be with them through the end of the season.
