Mark Katic having surgery Monday, may miss season

The 22-year-old defenseman prospect said he was stunned by the news a doctor delivered after his MRI exam on Wednesday: His dislocated left shoulder requires surgery and his entire season is in doubt.

"I don't really remember much he said after that," said Katic, who is as upbeat a player as the Isles have in their organization. "I was just in shock."

Katic had surgery on the same shoulder in February of 2010, forcing him to miss the final 30 games of his first pro season in Bridgeport. He had a solid 2010-11 and played 11 games with the Islanders, his shoulder holding up well.

But he said his skate caught a rut on the Coliseum ice just as he was hit along the boards and fell awkwardly -- similar, he said, to Mark Streit's freak injury during last September's Blue-Orange scrimmage.

"I think if this play happened a thousand times, it wouldn't have happened the same way," he said. "But I'm having surgery, I'm trying to stay positive and hopefully I'll be back before the season ends."
