What the playoffs mean to me: Frans Nielsen

Frans Nielsen has played the most games, 367 including tonight, of any of the core Islanders, so he is particularly pleased at the first playoff trip for him and his longtime teammates.

Here’s the 29-year-old center “In Your Own Words” on this season and what’s to come:

“It means a lot. We pretty much have had the same core the whole time and it’s been fun seeing the team grow and get better every year. We finally figured out how to work hard, how hard it is to win in this league and how you have to be ready every game. We figured out nothing comes easy. It’s been hard work these last couple months.

“That was one of the big reasons I really wanted to stay here, to sign the contract last year. Being here day one of the rebuild, to see it all through, see the team go -- being on the whole ride from day one and hopefully one day we’ll go all the way. Hopefully this year. Just being part of this, there’s been tough years, but it’s great to finally get some success.

“We figured out what it takes now. I talked to [Jay] Pandolfo about it last year. He won a couple Cups, he knows what it takes. He said, ‘You guys have a playoff team here, you just gotta figure it out.’ I think we’re doing that now.”
