Since we're heading toward a rather quiet time from the Islanders as the NHL playoffs begin without them, I'll have a couple posts here of interviews with players from Monday's breakup day.
Today, we'll begin with John Tavares. He spoke on a variety of topics, including the chemistry "hiccup" the team suffered when Matt Moulson was traded, who he thinks might work well on his left side next...Read more »
Colin McDonald has been nominated for the Masterton Trophy by the Islanders’ chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
The award goes to the player who “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication” to the sport.
McDonald, 29, didn’t become a regular NHLer until joining the Islanders for training camp last season after 405 AHL games....Read more »
TAMPA -- A few notes of interest off Tuesday night’s game, the latest in a long line of “Oh, hey, that happened” nights for the Islanders this season
In talking with Colin McDonald and Matt Martin, the Trottier and Bossy of the 5-4 win (each had two goals and McDonald had an assist), they spoke about the adjustments of moving from mostly playing with Casey Cizikas to playing with Ryan Strome,...Read more »
EDMONTON -- The deadline has passed and it's safe to say just about every observer, from the professional types on TSN and Sportsnet up here to just about every fan on Twitter, feels the Islanders failed. A few thoughts and notes on the last several weeks of profound disappointment in Islander country:
-- The Thomas Vanek trade quite obviously fell short of expectations. Once Vanek rejected...Read more »
WINNIPEG -- There was no trade news out of the Islanders on Monday, but that doesn’t mean things are dull.
Garth Snow, as he normally does, is keeping his own counsel while fielding plenty of calls from fellow general managers. You don’t hear much about rumors with the Isles because that’s the way Snow wants it. There aren’t open lists of team names who’ve inquired about Thomas Vanek or Andrew...Read more »
The trade deadline is seven days away and the Islanders will be busy -- just not quite yet.
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported on Tuesday night that six teams have called Islanders GM Garth Snow about Thomas Vanek, with one team making a “serious offer” that was, obviously, rejected. McKenzie said there are a similar number of teams inquiring about Andrew MacDonald, with no offers made as of yet.

Frans Nielsen suffered a broken left hand on Saturday, one last indignity for the Islanders as they headed into the Olympic break.
According to Islanders GM Garth Snow, Nielsen may be out a month -- which, given the current break, would mean missing perhaps 4-5 games once the team reconvenes.
Colorado defenseman Erik Johnson delivered a two-handed slash to Nielsen’s hand with 7:52 left...Read more »
The Islanders definitely took in all the pomp and circumstance of Wednesday’s Stadium Series game during their Tuesday practice and family skate.
A few guys asking which Yankees had which lockers -- for the record, massage therapist Jim Miccio had the place of honor, assigned Derek Jeter’s stall -- and marveling at the surroundings.
Well, maybe not all of them marveled -- Bostonian and...Read more »
Lubomir Visnovsky returns to the Islanders lineup on Monday night after missing 46 games with a concussion. That’s good news for the team’s defense corps.
“It’s basically like picking up a veteran at the trade deadline,” Thomas Hickey said. “He played such big minutes for us, first-unit power play, last couple minutes of a game. For us young guys, we’d never had those experiences, so it took...Read more »
With comments in recent days ranging from Steve Bartlett, his agent, to ESPN's Pierre Lebrun and then some response from Islanders GM Garth Snow on Wednesday regarding Thomas Vanek's contract status, I thought I'd talk to Vanek about it Thursday morning.
Candid as always, Vanek said he understands that the Islanders need to know in the next week or two whether he's open to signing here long-term....Read more »
