BUFFALO - The latest playoff picture snapshot is not a pretty one for the Islanders.

Amazing what one game without any points can do at this late stage, but the Isles definitely felt the sting of Thursday night’s 2-1 regulation loss to the Flyers (watch highlights here).

Even an OT or shootout point would have made this a bit easier to take. The Isles dropped from sixth and controlling...

PHILADELPHIA -- Next up in our series about what the playoffs mean to these Islanders is Keith Aucoin, the ultimate journeyman.

The 34-year-old center will play his 40th game of the season Thursday night, a personal high. This will also be the first time in Aucoin’s 12-year pro career he’ll spend an entire season in the NHL.

First up is Colin McDonald, the 28-year-old Connecticut native who had just seven NHL games before he made the Islanders out of training camp. He’s missed only three games (two to suspension and one to the flu) and has seven goals,...

Some quotes from around the Islanders' locker room in Raleigh, N.C., on Tuesday night after they clinched their first playoff berth since 2007.

John Tavares: “We had to win a lot more games late because we put ourselves behind the eight-ball with the start to the season we had. We knew we needed to start winning some games that we’d been losing the first half of the season, and we needed to...

Islanders lacking playoff experience

Islanders' Frans Nielsen celebrates his goal against Winnipeg

(Credit: AP)

It's obvious that the Isles' homegrown core never has experienced a playoff series — 16 of the 27 players on the roster never played in an NHL playoff game.

But even their veterans are fairly inexperienced. Evgeni Nabokov leads the way with 80 playoff games, all with the Sharks; next is Marty Reasoner with 23 games, his last coming in 2003.

The Islander with the most recent playoff run:...

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Islanders' AHL affiliate in Bridgeport missed the playoffs and its season ended Sunday.
