Good and bad afterthoughts from Isles-Rangers

A few notes after another two-goal rally by the Islanders to beat the Rangers:

-- I noted it a bit on Twitter throughout the game and even Jack Capuano didn’t let it go uncommented upon afterwards: The bad start Tuesday night had a lot to do with the John Tavares line. True, both Rick Nash goals came off near-misses at the other end -- the puck hopping on Tavares off a two- on-one and Thomas...

In praise of Calvin de Haan

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A few thoughts as the second week of this road trip begins... And we go from -15 a week ago to the low 80s on Monday:

-- I focused quite a bit on Calvin de Haan in Monday’s game story. That may have given short shrift to some other key contributors to Sunday night’s 4-2 win over the Stars: Kevin Poulin, who was solid again after giving up a couple of stoppable goals...

Islanders play reminiscent of 2013 squad

TORONTO -- I never want to make too many direct comparisons between this year’s Islanders and last year’s, but it was hard to avoid last night. This 5-3 win looked an awful lot like the 5-3 win here on April 18.

John Tavares dominating? Check. He was 2-1-3 in April, 0-3-3 last night. Early deficit? Check. Down 2-0 last season, 1-0 last night. Continuing a run of resilient play on the road?...

On Olympic picks and Islander goalies

Thomas Vanek of the Islanders celebrates his second-period

(Credit: Jim McIsaac)

TORONTO -- The big deal up here Tuesday is the Canadian Olympic roster announcement at 11 a.m.

From an Islanders perspective, there isn’t much mystery. John Tavares will be named to the squad for the Sochi Games and it was a lock even before Monday night’s hat trick/five-point game, though that was probably a nice bonus for Steve Yzerman and the rest of the Canadian brain trust.

Thomas...

Thoughts on Kyle Okposo, Olympic hockey and Isles' win streak

A few thoughts from the past couple days, including the Islanders’ third straight win:

-- It certainly made for a tidy storyline Thursday night that Kyle Okposo fired home the OT winner.

-- The Isles’ first overtime victory in nearly a full calendar year and first home OT win in nearly two calendar years -- and, since I was home and not racing around the locker room as Mark Herrmann...

John Tavares doesn't practice with lower body issue

Islanders captain John Tavares did not practice with the team Friday because of a lower body issue and is day-to-day, coach Jack Capuano said.

Capuano said he did not know what the lower body issue was caused by and did not say whether Tavares would play Saturday at home against the Devils.

"Anytime your captain is out, you have some concern, there's no question," Capuano said.

Islanders keep critics at bay -- at least for a night

SAN JOSE -- The Islanders kept the wolves/demons/pitchfork-wielding Twitterers at bay for a night, doing what they did exceptionally well last season on Tuesday: Staying calm and rallying to win a game after falling behind.

This season, especially the past month, has been game after game of the Islanders playing well -- or at least, playing even -- for 10, 20, 30, sometimes even 40, 50 or...

Too many points-less Isles right now

Jack Capuano admitted he’s not a “stat guy” after the Islanders’ latest debacle on Tuesday -- don’t get excited, advanced-stats gang, he wasn’t even talking about those -- but even he had to mention the most ridiculous of all the ridiculous numbers coming out of this 8-15-5 team.

The Islanders are now 0-13-3 when scoring two goals or fewer. In a defense-first league, in a division where teams...

Test of leadership for Isles, Tavares

TORONTO -- A few thoughts on the latest blah performance from the Islanders here on Tuesday night:

-- The players kept the doors to the locker room closed for a few extra minutes after the game. They did the same thing after the loss in Columbus 10 days earlier. It wasn’t exactly a cure-all then, and I think these players-only meetings can be a bit overblown at times.

Nearly every Islander...

Thoughts after Thursday night's loss

(Credit: Jim McIsaac)

A few thoughts before the Wings come to town on Saturday and I take off for the weekend -- you’ll be in Jim Baumbach’s capable hands for Saturday night game coverage:

-- Thursday night was a real stinger, and it was evident after the game. Jack Capuano usually tries to zig when everyone else zags, so his mild postgame comments are not a sign of denial. He’s not one to pile on when he sees...
