Conspicuously absent from the list I posted Monday of Islanders heading to the IIHF World Championships in Germany this May was defenseman Mark Streit.

Streit has represented his home country of Switzerland many times throughout his career--most recently as he team captain in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics--but he will not participate in next month's tournament.

Why?

Streit told me it has nothing to do with the coaching change--long-time coach Ralph Krueger has been replaced by Sean Simpson--just the need for some well-deserved R and R.

"It was a long season with the Olympics too," Streit said during the Islanders break-up day Monday. "I've never played so many games and so many minutes. After a long season there are little injuries and stuff, so I'm just going to take this time to rest and recover."

Hard to blame Streit for that given the way he dealt with the monster minutes he played each night this season.

Streit finished fifth in the league in total ice time, averaging 25:41 per game.
