Isles lose 7-3 to Penguins

After falling behind three goals, the Islanders didn't have much juice left in the third.

Former Islander Bill Guerin piled on for Pittsburgh's 7th goal of the night, with Crosby picking up an assist for his 4th point of the game (two goals, two assists).

In general, the game has had a nasty edge. Case in point:

Alexei Ponikarovsky ejected during the third after crushing Josh Bailey into the boards, leaving him lying on the ice for a bit.  Bailey is  fine, but he did not return to the game and will leave Pittsburgh with a nasty cut on his right cheek that required several stitches.

"We rallied back and kept making a game out of it until the end of the second," Bailey said.

After that, the Islanders really couldn't contend with the amount of firepower they possess.

"They have guys that can bury their chances and giving up four goals in the first period is a tough road to come back from," Gordon said.

"We scored goals and made plays, but we didn't do some of the little things," Tim Jackman said.

Isles trail Penguins 6-3 after two periods

Despite Josh Bailey's backhanded deflection that pulled the Islanders within one goal at 4-3, the Penguins scored two straight to pull away and double up the Isles 6-3.

With Dwayne Roloson in net, Sidney Crobsy's slapshot power-play goal in the middle frame gave him his 50th goal of the season.

As if that wasn't enough of an achievement for one night, Crosby collected his 500th point of his career as well.

Not too shabby.

UPDATE: Apparently, Crosby indicated that what would've been his 50th goal actually went off Bill Guerin, so while he did still earn four points on the night, he ahs yet to chase down 50. But how about that for honesty?

Isles trail 4-2 after first period

In a wide-open, penalty-riddled first period, the Isles face a two-goal deficit heading into the first intermission.

Before the game Sidney Crosby talked about using the emotion of tonight's ceremony to propel the team into a strong start and they did just that.

Islanders are holding right now thanks to Matt Moulson's 28th of the season and Kyle Okposo's lightning-quick wrister, but the Penguins star power is threatening to pull away.

John Tavares picked up his 50th point with an assist on Moulson's re-direct.

Speaking of closing in, Crosby's first-period tally brings him a goal shy of 50 on the season.

Trevor Gillies had a relatively easy takedown against Mike Rupp toward the end of the period. That's three straight bouts--Cote, Carkner and Rupp-- he's bested his opponent...guy is earning his keep.
