Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson suffered “minor injuries” in a car crash early Saturday morning after his vehicle flipped on the Garden State Parkway after striking the car in front of him.

The New Jersey State Police received a call about the accident at 4:29 a.m., according state trooper Christopher Kay.

Wilkerson, the Jets first-round pick in 2011, crawled out of his vehicle and was later taken to a Newark, N.J. hospital. He was charged with “careless driving” and “failure to maintain a lane,” Kay confirmed.

There was no mention of the other driver's condition in the accident  report, nor did Kay know whether that same driver was taken to the hospital as well.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in Wilkerson’s crash, the state trooper said.

Wilkerson, who was expected to make significant contributions on the field this season, had been scheduled to appear at a charity golf event on Long Island Monday morning, but did not attend.

News of the accident was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
