Ferriero, a forward who has played 92 games for the Sharks over the past three seasons, was summoned today from Hartford and presumably will play again the Leafs tonight at the Garden.

The 5-11 right wing had four goals and 14 assists in 34 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and an assist in the Whale's 4-1 win last night .

He was acquired on Thursday in a trade with Pittsburgh for Chad Kolarik.

Ferriero, 25, who was born in Essex, Mass., and was one of the top scorers at Boston College, had a career-high seven goals in 35 Sharks games last season.

What it means:  Perhaps Arron Asham's groin isn't fully healed, or, more likely, Stu Bickel goes back to defense after a brief stint at forward. Or the coaching staff believes Ferriero, who is tenacious, has speed and a good shot,  can sub for Chris Kreider, who was scratched Thursday.

We'll learn a bit more at the morning skate at 10:30 am...
