Jeff Halpern waived, more Friday notes

Veteran center Jeff Halpern, 36, who was signed to a one-year, $700,000 deal as a free agent last summer, has been placed on waivers.

Sounds as if the front office is freeing a roster spot for when Arron Asham returns, possibly Sunday against Washington.

Halpern played 3:41 in the 3-1 loss to the Panthers; he had one assist in 30 games and was a minus-5.  If he clears, he will be assigned to Hartford.

Rangers are not practicing today, and we are waiting word on whether Rick Nash faces any hearing/supplemental discipline for the unpenalized high hit on Tomas Kopecky last night.

***

Nothing new on Marc Staal (eye, facial injuries) at this point, although, as we wrote on Monday, his brothers Jordan and Eric both believe that he hopes to play again this season.

Marc is expected to wear a visor upon returning. Reports out of Carolina say both Jordan and Eric were wearing visors today at practice, so Mrs. Staal of Thunder Bay, who we hear makes some mean meatballs and potatoes, may have sent a strong message to her sons at that dinner in New York on Sunday
