More NHL games, $$$ lost to lockout; Rangers toll alone at 33

Slipped in under the morning fog on the BQE this morning to the borough of my birth to catch a Nets practice at Barclays Center. Pinch-hitting for Newsday colleague Rod Boone (Hint: C Brook Lopez (foot) practiced).

Back to the NHL, if you read me on Twitter @stevezipay (and more than 10,000 followers can’t be wrong can they? Well…) here and elsewhere, another swath of games were expected to be axed Monday, and they were -- thru Dec. 30.  That’s 526 total, 33 of ‘em Rangers games. The on-again, off-again CBA negotiations are supposed to continue sometime this week.  If/when an abridged season commences (of 48, 50, 52 games), a deal would have to be forged in the next few weeks. And a completely new schedule adopted.

Me, I’m headed to Toronto tomorrow and returnin’ Thursday (no, not for secret talks or a charity game, no such luck). Volunteered to cover for the aforementioned Mr. Boone when the Nets face the Raptors at Air Canada Centre Thursday.

In addition to the hoops coverage, I imagine the mood of the NHL fans in the city will be grimmer than around here. I’ll file notes and quotes and observations from the scene on Bay Street and the nabe (and maybe Gretzky’s) right here, so stay tuned.

Here in NY, Newsday’s Arthur Staple will keep tabs on the lockout while I’m off to Ontario.
