Rangers claim D Roman Hamrlik, waived by Caps

The Rangers were looking for defensive depth and today---at least in part prodded by the puck to the face of Marc Staal---claimed Roman Hamrlik, 38, off waivers from the Capitals.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound native of Czechoslovakia was a healthy scratch in 16 of 20 games, and was 2-11-13 with Washington last season. He also has played with Tampa, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal and the Islanders.

Hamrlik played 300 games for the Isles over four seasons starting in 2000-01, with 30 goals, 110 assists. He also played in three post seasons with them.

There is no update on Staal yet today, although it is very possible that he will miss Thursday's game against the Isles in Uniondale.
