They blamed the first period's wave of odd-man rushes on not playing a game since last Tuesday. And many of the Blueshirts who lost a 4-1 match to the Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome hadn't played competitively since last Monday in New Jersey.

I have post-game quotes in a late web story on newsday.com

Important to remember: The Rangers were without eight key players for various reasons: Derek Stepan, Ryan Callahan, Carl Hagelin (you know why) and thess five: Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi, Derick Brassard, Mats Zuccarello and Benoit Pouliot, who will play tonight.

The Blueshirts on the bubble  will get three more chances to earn or lose jobs this week: In Edmonton, Vancouver and Las Vegas against the Kings.

Martin Biron will start Tuesday at Rexall Place. Here's the rest of the lineup:

Pouliot-Brass-Zuke; Kreider-Miller-Asham; Hrivik-Lindberg-Kristo; Haley-Moore-Dorsett; McD-Girardi; Staal-Allen, Johnson-Hughes.

So we will get to see J.T. Miller (hamstring) for the first time, as well as Tommy Hughes. He and Arron Johnson can't be as ineffective as Stu Bickel and Justin Falk were at times on Monday, can they? I'm thinking if Allen plays well, his stock may rise.

Vigneault eventually moved Kreider away from the Richards-Nash combo (Nash hit the post in his best chance of the game). At one point, Richards was 2 for 13 on faceoffs.

Thought Jesper Fast, and Danny Kristo (four shots) and Marek Hrivik had moments.

Notables not in lineup: McIlrath, Kantor, Yogan, Syvret. They could be trending towrad Hartford.

Expect Del Zotto to wear an ear protector after receiving 18 stitches from an accidental skate slice when T.J. Galiardi slipped when checked by Boyle. DZ missed most of the second period before returning. After the game, he said:  "Something about me and skates. I got 50 stitches that time across the chest," he said, referring to February 2010, when he was gashed by Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin..

More tomorrow,  early flight to Edmonton.
