Ryan Callahan sole alternate C; Alexei Semenov exits

PITTSBURGH----Ryan Callahan will be the only player with an A to start the season. Coach John Tortorella, who always had two alternates in Tampa, said he would wait for another candidate to emerge.

In a surprising twist, Alexei Semenov, who had agreed to a $600,000 one year contract on Wednesday---as did his agent---were overruled by Semenov's wife, GM Glen Sather said, adding that Semenov has tears in his eyes. Semenov told Newsday before the mornign skate that he didn't think a deal would happen, and would possibly play in Russia, where his wife is living.

               Quotes after the skate....
