They pushed in the beginning of the third, but Robin Lehner was up to the task and the Rangers didn't have the legs after that. The Senators did.

Jakub Silfverberg scored in the third, when the game was on the line, and Derek Stepan and others couldn't. Simple.

And now, with a major stretch of home games in the rear-view mirror, the 12-9-2 Rangers begin a long road. With 25 games left, 16 are away from the Garden, where they are 9-5-1 .

More on all this with quotes and stats, on newsday.com.

Here's some extras:

Why did Torts play a gassed Roman Hamrlik, 38 and in a back-to-back? Why sit Brian Boyle? He's far better than Stu Bickel. Seven minutes and one hit....And Micheal Haley brought the toughness with six hits and three of the 23 blocked shots.

Rangers are skating Saturday at noon.
