The Wrap: Post-game Quotes, Notes and Stats
Major resiliency by the Blueshirts tonight.
Michael Sauer's game-winner came on his 8-second PP shift. He played 11:49 and it was his only shot on goal. "It was a battle on both sides," he said after posing with the puck for an NHL photographer who records such events. "To get the win at the start of the road trip is important, 2 huge points"...At every level, you’re going to remember your first one (goal), It was great that it was a game-winning goal, too, that put us ahead, that always helps, especially at that point in the game, it’s that tight, everybody’s pressing."
Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves, perhaps the biggest with his glove, snapping away Mike Fisher's high ripper in the third when the score was 3-3.
He didn;t cover the post when Fisher drew him to his left on a brekaway and erred early in the second with the score tied at 2, when he was undecided on how to handle Fisher's long shot that was disallowed after a viedo review.
"I had so much time to think….I was going with the glove and then decided to go with the head, so it hit me (in the side of the helmet) and It went down (and hit the post). I didn’t get a clean hit and I knew I was in trouble. Then they celebrated, so I thought it was a goal. Sometimes when you get too much time to think, you change your mind twice."
Said Lundqvist: "Good to win this one late after a tough loss (against Ottawa) at home late. The key was just to keep composure, it's important when it’s a one goal game that we wait for our chances, especially in the third period. It's good to see we played mature and wait for our chances. If we play good defense, we know we'll get them."
Two Rangers who missed significant time with injuries had two assists each. Michael Rozsival and Marian Gaborik had their 8th and 9th. Tortorella noted that the Fedotenko-Stepan-Gaborik line played well. They totalled two goals and two assists....The Rangers had 28 shots, Sens 27. At one point, they were down 7-1 and 15-7. but had 16 in the crazy second period. They had just six shots in the third, but three goals.
