Torts on Gilroy and Redden: Mixed reviews, 7th D coming?

The coach politely declined to discuss the return of Ds Matt Gilroy and Wade Redden in the post-game scrum in Carolina because he hadn't the time to review the tape.

So this morning I asked him again:

"I think Gilly tried to engage," he said, "which is something we talked to him about, as far as separating people from pucks a little bit harder. In fact, I showed a couple clips today of him doing that. We know he can skate, we know he can pass the puck, but we want him to work on the things he needs to work on, so I thought he made some strides.

Reds, I thought he had some good shifts, I thought he had some crappy shifts, so it’s still, as we go through here...we’re frozen here at Christmas, we’re not bringing anybody up, but after Christmas, we have some decisions to make along the way. A seventh defenseman, Torts admitted, “could be in our discussions (after Christmas)”.

It's Ales Kotalik's birthday today. At his locker, Kotalik, who isn't exactly in the coach's good graces, just laughed when someone asked if Torts had bought him a cake.
