Blue Notes

Steve Zipay takes you inside the locker room, home and on the road, with the New York Rangers, and also writes about the NHL, off and on the ice.

Tuesday topics: Tonight at the Rock and Andrej Sustr

Driving north back home in the snow-ice storm last night (didn't push it past 35 mph), realized I never threw a note in The Wrap about Andrej Sustr. There was a little buzz in the press box about Sustr, 22, a 6-foot-8 Czech dman who plays at U of Nebraska-Omaha, once TSN’s Bob McKenzie tweeted that he was leaving school.
From McKenzie, who surely got it from his agent: “Sustr will weigh his options, and he has many, this week. No rush or timetable on a decision.”
So every team, including the Rangers, gets to kick the tires on Sustr, who is considered closer to a project than the next Zdeno Chara. Needs to improve skating to reach NHL level, I was told by a person who follows college hockey, not a scorer, and not overly physical.  Sounds like a Torts guy, eh? (Sarcasm alert).
But in the NHL, everybody is lusting over defensemen, so everybody (supposedly) is interested. No surprises here. And really, would not help this season, so we move on.  Me, I’m more interested in Dylan McIlrath’s ongoing development. We know for sure that he’ll get a long look next camp.

Whatcha really should be interested in is tonight’s game at The Rock.  No morning skate for Rangers, so I won’t be filing any of the usual personnel/lineup updates around noon. But I’ll will be motoring into Newark well before the match, and will fill ya in. And remember to follow me on Twitter @stevezipay.
One note: Newsday’s email system on Monday changed from one platform to another and some bugs remain, so if you emailed me to the address under the byline, it probably didn’t get to me yet. Patience, folks. Try again later today or tomorrow. You could also comment/react/rant/vent here or on Twitter...

Finally, if you missed my Sunday Insider, most of it was about Jonathan Tanner Miller, who kinda played pretty good last night. You can catch it here…
