Just to warm up with a little recent history...

Jan. 21, 2012, almost a year ago, to the day,  the Rangers were at TD Bank Garden, with Henrik Lundqvist vs. Tuukka Rask, the two netminders expected to square off on Saturday, and the Blueshirts won 3-2 in OT on Marian Gaborik's goal. It was the Rangers' 30th win of the season.

Then there was the Valentine's Day game, Lundqvist...

As the NHL season opens, a snapshot, based on goaltending, offense, team defense, special teams, depth, speed, grit, coaching, schedule.

Guarantee: Volatility.

With injuries, this won't be the same in a month or in April, when the playoff spots are on the line in the unchartered, choppy waters of a 48-game campaign.

The 35-year-old defenseman, who has played in the AHL the last two seasons, is out of the organization.

He cleared waivers and is a UFA, and insiders say he has some offers  (Edmonton? Ottawa?) ---as well he should, because he will be inexpensive; the Rangers are continuing to pay him this season.

They also will absorb his pro-rated cap hit this year, and two-thirds of the remaining...

Grrrr...Just spent more than a half-hour on this and when I tried to file, it vanished. Gone. No recovery. Nice job, blog software. Had to completely rewrite. What a royal pain. As if I have nothing more to do tonight.

OK, loser’s lament over. For my next trick, I’ll need a volunteer.

Five storylines from NYR camp: Day 3

Henrik Lundqvist makes a save during training camp

No. 1.

Gotta be Richards’ absence. Flu fells him for third consecutive day. Lost hours to mesh with Rick Nash. Not worried about his condition: Richie’s been active all summer and fall. It’s the timing. One reason to keep him away is not to infect mates. He should be back on ice Thursday, Friday. Team’s not on-ice Wednesday. Watching video from last season.

Wade Redden: Sitting here in limbo

WADE REDDEN

(Credit: Getty Images)

This has been out there since soon after  the tentative CBA was forged and word about the compliance buyout formula (two for each team starting in June) was circulated, and mentioned here briefly.

The news is that with four days remaining before opening day rosters are set, the Rangers want to pay Redden (who has a $5.6 mil cap hit) to sit out the season and buy him out in June. Montreal...
