Steve Zipay takes you inside the locker room, home and on the road, with the New York Rangers, and also writes about the NHL, off and on the ice.
Finally arrived at O’Hare, brutal traffic in the Windy City as usual….
(Highlight of trip: Between sets of blues vets Sonic Soul, who were killing it at Legends, briefly spoke with Buddy Guy at the bar. Always outspoken and still a tad crusty at 77, but he’s playing in his joint for most of this month. Congratulated him for being honored at the Kennedy Center annual festivities in Washington....Read more »
I'm travelling today and Newsday's Will Sammon is filling in tonight at MSG. I'll be back for the Leafs game tomorrow, then on to DC and Florida as 2013 winds down. Anyway, for Henrik Lundqvist, it’s time for a break. Talbot will start Sunday instead of Lundqvist in the eighth game of what has been a catastrophic franchise-record nine-game homestand. Lundqvist has started eight consecutive games,...Read more »

So, fellow citizens, the last time that the Rangers---and yours truly---were at the Verizon Center here in Washington, it was May 13, Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, and with a 5-0 win, the Rangers eliminated the Capitals from the playoffs.
Lot of water under the bridge since, eh?
To be sure, both squads are off to tepid starts: The Caps are 2-4; the Blueshirts 1-4.

SAN JOSE -- Rick Nash walked out of SAP Center late Tuesday with a headache that had worsened as the game went on, and was worried about a possible concussion. The rest of the Rangers walked out humbled and sullen after a pathetic effort in a 9-2 trouncing by the Sharks in the third game of the season.
Nash was caught by a high elbow from defenseman Brad Stuart just 2:32 into the game...Read more »
The Rangers third goal will make all the highlight, or lowlight, films, Ryan McDonagh's 180-foot shorthanded clearing pass/bank shot off the right boards that Kings netminder Jonathan Quick totally misplayed at 4:39 of the third period here in Staples Center. It was a moment that left 18,118 fans and players and media stunned, scratching noggins and looking for a replay.
“I didn’t...Read more »
"Good to have our captain back," said Alain Vigneault, after Ryan Callahan delivered a check to Robyn Regehr on his first shift after shoulder surgery in May. "It was my first time seeing him live, being with him as a coach; he brings a lot to the table, poise with the puck, competitive nature when he doesn’t have it, finishes every check. For a player who’s not big in size, he certainly...Read more »
Before the Rangers went on their brutal western swing, Henrik Lundqvist said if there was an indication that he would be distracted during the season by negotiations for a contract extension, he would put the talks on hold.
So after practice today, I asked him if there was any progress.
“I don’t have anything for you,” Lundqvist said with a smile. “We still have a few days. You can get...Read more »
