Steve Zipay takes you inside the locker room, home and on the road, with the New York Rangers, and also writes about the NHL, off and on the ice.

The Semis, Zuccarello, NYR practice Thursday, more

Returned from a sunny soiree in the tropics late Sunday and have been bedeviled by laptop issues since, hence my absence from this little corner of the internet. Our IT team is on the case, unsure when it will be resolved or how long my little-used and ancient personal computer will proceed without giving up the ghost but...we soldier on.

Some things to report:

I watched some...

Oly Roster Freeze in effect: No deals for Callahan, Girardi

NHL clubs cannot make a move now until Feb. 24, the day after the gold medal game in Sochi....

Teams chatted and some minor moves were made, but the big-name, pending UFAs won't be dealt until before the March 5 NHL trade deadline.

Not really a surprise with Rangers captain Ryan Callahan, if you've been paying attention for the past week. The sides are considerably apart, and the pressure...

Ryan Callahan back in front on power play; Talbot starts

The captain, who has four power play goals but had not been on either of the man-advantage units during the recent 0-14 slide, was back in front of the net on one unit at the morning skate.

Chris Kreider, who had been in that spot, remains on that unit as a forward. Brad Richards, who had been on one point with Ryan McDonagh, moved to the other unit's point, with Dan Girardi. Callahan had...

Callahan sets tone with two goals, assist in 5-1 pounding of Avs

Teams from Denver haven’t fared well in the past few days.

Rangers-Avs at MSG. Projected lineup, more

The Rangers, who have won three straight, skated here at MSG this morn, all but Marc Staal, whose wife Lindsay, gave birth to their first child, a daughter, Anna Veralyn.  But the red-hot Avalanche, who won 2-1 in New Jersey last night, did not skate, so not sure of their lines and d-pairs or if two former NYR will play: P.A. Parenteau and John Mitchell, will play.

So the NYR lineup,...

After practice, Callahan declines to discuss contract status

Here's what we know about captain Ryan Callahan. He's keeping the negotiations about a new contract separate from his day job as best he can.

The pending unrestricted free agent, who has been the subject of trade rumors, sparked by the due diligence of Rangers management, tossed a football around on ice with his mates before practice in Westchester, then declined to discuss the talks, saying...

Closing it out: Rangers-Isles season finale at MSG

Yeah, we know it's only a day before February, but tonight is the last Rangers-Isles matchup of the regular season. The Blueshirts have lost the last two here at MSG, by 5-3 each, in late December and 11 days ago.  They did, of course, win 2-1 outdoors on Wednesday.

Same lineups expected; Henrik Lundqvist is starting his fourth straight game and Evgeni Nabokov his second...

Stadium Series II: Isles-Rangers outdoors

Heading to the Bronx soon enough, but a quick report:

Same lineup for Rangers. Still unsure of goaltender for Isles, but colleague Arthur Staple believes it will be Nabokov, and so do I.

Rangers can reach 60 points with a point, and 61 with two.  Since we'll be at Yankee Stadium, make it 61 with an asterisk.

Couple thoughts:

Remember that even if the Isles fall behind,...

It's the time of year when North American writers start keeping closer tabs on foreign newspapers and web sites to pick up info about European free agents. Sometimes the news isn't surprising.

When the Rangers traded RFA Michael Del Zotto for Kevin Klein, President and General Manager Glen Sather said that Blueshirts brass had preliminary talks with the team's free agents and said he "wanted...
