Heard around: Orr's book, Vigneault, Anisimov

- The book “Orr: My Story” is a good read. But hearing former Rangers defenseman Dave Maloney talk about his rookie encounter with the Bruins icon is a good listen. “It was my first year in Buffalo and he came down the left side and went around me so fast, he had to stop and turn around to see if anybody else was onside,” Maloney recalled. “I never saw that,” said veteran broadcaster Doc Emrick,...

In prepping for the first visit to Newark this season on Saturday, the Rangers front office and head coach Alain Vigneault are opting to fill the hole left by Ryan Callahan (broken thumb, hit by shot against Caps), with experience raather than youth.

The message, it appears, is that the 2-4 Rangers need to nail down a few winnable games, and let the youngsters simmer a bit in Hartford. Vigneault...

WASHINGTON -- He never saw it coming. Fifty-one seconds into the third period Wednesday, Caps forward Troy Brouwer blindsided Rangers center Derek Stepan with a forearm in neutral ice, clipping him in the helmet.

Stepan went down and eventually skated to the dressing room; Brouwer was not penalized. The Rangers center returned to the bench with about 13 minutes left.

“The referee...

For the third time in four games on this season-opening Western trip, the Rangers (1-2) will face a club staging its home opener, with all the inherent ceremonies, introductions and an energetic crowd.

For the Blueshirts, tonight's clash with the Ducks (2-1) will have a greater emphasis on intensity.

They presumably will be without Rick Nash, who apparently sustained a concussion on...

Derek Stepan, who practiced for ther first time since signing his two-year, $61.5 million contract on Thursday,  said he needs some more conditioning and time to adjust to the head coach Alain Vigneault's system, which requires different reads on offense than under John Tortorella.

And he was met with a twist: Brad Richards on left wing, a Vigneault experiment, and Ryan Callahan...

The word began trickling out this morning that Stepan and the Rangers were close (and you may recall that I wrote here last week that I believed a deal would get done in the final days of this trip out West), and pretty soon, it became official: two years, $6.15 million, good for both sides. Stepan, 23, the team's No. 1 center, gets a nice raise and won't miss the season opener in Phoenix.

Spent some time today diggin' through and tossing out some paper in boxes in the Chez Zipay basement with Roxy Music's "Manifesto" on the turntable (yes, turntable, do I havta explain?) and found a Rangers 2010 training camp roster.

As the great Sam Cooke once sang, "A change gonna come…"

Oh, yes it will.

As reported yesterday, the 23-year-old has not been in camp, as the Rangers and his agent Matt Oates, continue to wrestle with a new contract.

The first scrimmage of camp is 11 a.m. today, and with two preseason games against the Devils Monday and Philadelphia Tuesday, the impasse is raising some concern. The Rangers leave Wednesday for four days of camp in Western Canada and then four games...

Center Derek Stepan's contract stalemate continues.

A team spokesman today confirmed that the 23-year-old restricted free agent's status hadn't changed.

The Rangers are offering the team's leading scorer last season a two-year bridge deal. Stepan, who earned $875,000 last season, and his agent, are reportedly seeking around $3 million per season and if possible, a longer-term deal.
