My take: Fair-market extension for Dan Girardi

The six-year, $33-million contract that Dan Girardi and his camp agreed to earlier today is a win for both sides.

The Rangers needed to lock up their fearless, reliable (four games missed in eight seasons), shot-blocking, right-handed first-pair defenseman, who would have been the target of a dozen clubs had he gotten to unrestricted free agency in June. It's simple supply and demand. There's...

We'll be reporting from minicamp starting tomorrow at 11. Other teams started drills and conditioning today. The expectation is that the Rangers will be wokring out every day for the next week at the MSG Training Center.

With Lundqvist still in Sochi, expect to see a second goalie in addition to Cam Talbot. Also believe rehabbing Derek Dorsett (broken leg, Jan. 3) will be skating. And presumably...

After missing seven games with a broken left thumb, Rangers captain Ryan Callahan is dressing against Anaheim at Madison Square Garden. Callahan, who broke the finger blocking a shot in Washington on Oct. 16, was scheduled to be out three to four weeks, but he was cleared Sunday.

To face Devils, Vigneault, front office, opting for experience

In prepping for the first visit to Newark this season on Saturday, the Rangers front office and head coach Alain Vigneault are opting to fill the hole left by Ryan Callahan (broken thumb, hit by shot against Caps), with experience raather than youth.

The message, it appears, is that the 2-4 Rangers need to nail down a few winnable games, and let the youngsters simmer a bit in Hartford. Vigneault...

Live from Anaheim: What to watch for during Rangers-Ducks

For the third time in four games on this season-opening Western trip, the Rangers (1-2) will face a club staging its home opener, with all the inherent ceremonies, introductions and an energetic crowd.

For the Blueshirts, tonight's clash with the Ducks (2-1) will have a greater emphasis on intensity.

They presumably will be without Rick Nash, who apparently sustained a concussion on...

SAN JOSE -- Rick Nash walked out of SAP Center late Tuesday with a headache that had worsened as the game went on, and was worried about a possible concussion. The rest of the Rangers walked out humbled and sullen after a pathetic effort in a 9-2 trouncing by the Sharks in the third game of the season.

Nash was caught by a high elbow from defenseman Brad Stuart just 2:32 into the game...

"Good to have our captain back," said Alain Vigneault, after Ryan Callahan delivered a check to Robyn Regehr on his first shift after shoulder surgery in May. "It was my first time seeing him live, being with him as a coach; he brings a lot to the table, poise with the puck, competitive nature when he doesn’t have it, finishes every check. For a player who’s not big in size, he certainly...

Finally, Game 2 at the Staples Center tonight.

Captain Ryan Callahan, out since May following labrum surgery on his left shoulder, pulls on the No. 24 jersey. Expect to see him on the third line, power play and penalty kill.

"I’ve made predictions before that I was going to ease somebody in, and once the game was there and if the guy looks good….", Vigneault said. "In...

Derek Stepan back: Preparing for Thursday's opener

(Credit: AP)

Derek Stepan, who practiced for ther first time since signing his two-year, $61.5 million contract on Thursday,  said he needs some more conditioning and time to adjust to the head coach Alain Vigneault's system, which requires different reads on offense than under John Tortorella.

And he was met with a twist: Brad Richards on left wing, a Vigneault experiment, and Ryan Callahan...
