My take: Fair-market extension for Dan Girardi

The six-year, $33-million contract that Dan Girardi and his camp agreed to earlier today is a win for both sides.

The Rangers needed to lock up their fearless, reliable (four games missed in eight seasons), shot-blocking, right-handed first-pair defenseman, who would have been the target of a dozen clubs had he gotten to unrestricted free agency in June. It's simple supply and demand. There's...

Blues no more: Morning musings after 3-2 win in Chicago

Finally arrived at O’Hare, brutal traffic in the Windy City as usual….

(Highlight of trip: Between sets of blues vets Sonic Soul, who were killing it at Legends, briefly spoke with Buddy Guy at the bar. Always outspoken and still a tad crusty at 77, but he’s playing in his joint for most of this month. Congratulated him for being honored at the Kennedy Center annual festivities in Washington....

So, fellow citizens, the last time that the Rangers---and yours truly---were at the Verizon Center here in Washington, it was May 13, Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, and with a 5-0 win, the Rangers eliminated the Capitals from the playoffs.

Lot of water under the bridge since, eh?

To be sure, both squads are off to tepid starts: The Caps are 2-4; the Blueshirts 1-4.

Dan Girardi (along with the Isles’ John Tavares and the Devils’ Andy Greene) are throwing out the first pitches before Friday’s Yanks-Tigers series opener, and the defenseman, who played first base growing up and sometimes brought his glove to the Rangers practice complex to catch with Chris Drury in the parking lot, loosened up his arm last week with one of the equipment staffers.

The bet...

Coming attractions: Yankee Stadium hockey for Super Bowl week

Bronx - August 8, 2013: A bird's eye

Lucky me.

A day after arriving back from a wonderful three weeks on the Emerald isle, I was on the green grass of that ballyard in the Bronx on Thursday where the official announcement of the two outdoor games (Rangers-Devils on Jan. 26 at 12:30 and Rangers-Islanders on Jan. 29 at 7:30) was delivered.  Posted a photo of the outline of the rink on Twitter @stevezipay.

Should be quite...
