Remember the memorable outdoor games in the Bronx when the Rangers faced the Islanders and Devils at Yankee Stadium in January 2014?

Well, another outdoor game is apparently being considered, but this time on the banks of the Hudson River, at Michie Stadium and the picturesque grounds of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Well-connected Canadian writer and broadcaster Elliott Friedman, in his weekly “30 Thoughts” column, wrote:

“Florida played New Jersey at West Point [in the Tate Rink] on Saturday. At the World Cup, there was a rumour going around that the NHL is considering an outdoor game at the football stadium. Proximity makes the Rangers the host. There are two franchises with ownership ties to the army that would undoubtedly want to play — Florida and Las Vegas.”

When Twitter followers on Sunday reminded Friedman that the Rangers had to be the road team — as they were for the Stadium Series because of tax consequences of playing a home game away from Madison Square Garden — Friedman responded: “I should have written it puts them there . . . other team could be host [like NJ/NYI].”

Michie Stadium seats 38,000 for football, and anyone who has attended a college game there can vouch for the picturesque setting and the red-white-and-blue atmosphere. Will that be enough to make it happen?

At least for a preseason game?

Certainly would be good publicity for the Las Vegas franchise, the newest member of the NHL in 2017-18: The Silver, Golden or Desert Nights. The name, chosen from three finalists, is supposed to be announced next month.
