Sean Avery is still in the intensive-care unit at St.
Vincent's Hospital, but his internal bleeding resulting from a lacerated spleen stopped yesterday afternoon, according to a Rangers spokesman.
Avery was not in condition to receive many visitors yesterday, though his mother, Marlene, and younger brother Scott flew down from Toronto to be with him. Rangers coach Tom Renney, who visited Avery at the hospital in the West Village on Wednesday, was going to visit again before Game 4 against the Penguins, but decided not to after hearing from team physician Andrew Feldman.
If Avery's internal bleeding ceases for a period of time, he would be moved out of the ICU. He was injured in the first period of Game 3 on Tuesday but continued to play. After the game, Avery felt pain from his abdomen radiating up to his shoulder and went to St. Vincent's with Feldman, where he was immediately admitted.
"I made a judgment call based on what I was getting for feedback, and he was still groggy and sleeping and stuff," Renney said before last night's must-win game. "I'm hoping I get to see him tomorrow, but I understand he's doing better late this afternoon and coming along nicely, so it appears everything is under control."
Brendan Shanahan and Brandon Dubinsky also visited Avery on Wednesday, along with owner Jim Dolan and a few other Madison Square Garden executives. "We just wanted to give him some support and show him we were thinking about him," Dubinsky said.
The rookie center said Avery had no words of inspiration for last night's game, but seeing him was inspiration enough for Dubinsky.
"When you see him and you know it's not life-threatening," Dubinsky said, "it makes you want to go out and play harder and get the job done."
